The data comprised purposively selected political visual artefacts from political rallies across the six Southwestern States in Nigeria (Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, and Lagos). The data were analyzed using Halliday’s (1985) systemic metafunctional principles and Barthes’ (1977) concepts of anchorage and relay. The study noted that, vests are the commonest type of semiotic artifact while caps, Ankara, and surrogate languages complement the use of vests for visual signification and meaning potentials in the discourse environment. The study also noted that, various political party colors reflect in almost all the visual images and they are suggestive of the ideology or level of commitment and political leanings of discourse participants. The study concluded that, semiotic resources or artefacts are an important aspect of...

Related features include grumbled fragments such as 'eem', 'ugh', 'oooh' and so on which are backchannels and can contribute to the success of any piece of dramatic work. This paper therefore examines how along with characterisation and cleverly woven language these backchannel items heighten the hilarious and comical effect of Ola Rotimi's Our Husband Has gone Mad Again which is meant to ridicule the selfishness and naivety of neo-colonial African politicians.

The data used were drawn from seventy final year students of Ooni Girls High School in Osun State Nigeria. The elicitation technique was an essay writing exercise in which the students were given two essay questions which would enable them to demonstrate their knowledge of cohesive devices in English. An analysis of the data revealed that the students lacked competence in their use of cohesive devices despite the fact that they had been exposed to intensive teaching of English for six years in the secondary school.

Even though the book was written years back, it seems the theme and ideas presented there are timeless and are still very relevant as regards Africa as a whole. Using Norman Fairclough's model of Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper examined the metaphysical representations of the moon in terms of the construction of social self/identity; the construction of social relationships and the construction of system of knowledge and beliefs and how these affect national consciousness. The paper also looked at some language strategies such as; rhetorical questions on means of livelihood, social amenities, financial institutions, social justice and social inequality. The analysis revealed the helplessness of the masses in the face of the oppressive attitude of the proletariat and the need to redeem the situation. The paper concluded that even though the poet recommends some palliative measures for the problems plaguing the nation, he does not seem to see a clear end to the struggle of the masses even with the involvement of a metaphysical phenomenon such as the 'moon' other than a positive change of attitude for nation building. The problem has to be approached holistically first at the individual level, then at the community level for a positive, lasting and rewarding national identity and pride.

The subjects for the study are thirty itinerant trado-medical practitioners. The data were collected through oral interview, tape recordings and observational notes. It is found out that though the trado-medical practitioners in Nigeria make use of several morphological processes in naming their products, the commonest morphological process used is blending.
