We report on the first demonstration of the Tm-doped all-PM mode-locked fiber laser with CNT used... more We report on the first demonstration of the Tm-doped all-PM mode-locked fiber laser with CNT used as a saturable absorber and two fiber Lyot filters embedded into the ring resonator. Using these two filters, we were able to adjust the central wavelength of laser generation to ~1855 nm as well as to obtain the required spectral width and necessary pulse duration that are required for the proposed applications. Possible issues with the method used are discussed.

We investigate the fluorescence characteristics of a purely Ce-doped silica fiber and demonstrate... more We investigate the fluorescence characteristics of a purely Ce-doped silica fiber and demonstrate broad-bandwidth fluorescence across the visible and near-infrared. The Ce-doped fiber is fabricated using standard modified chemical vapor deposition technology. Trace metal analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry confirmed the purity of Ce-doping. The Ce valence state of 3+ was revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The optimum pump wavelength for the broadest luminescence from a fiber is scanned between 405 nm to 440 nm wavelength of diode lasers operating under continuous-wave regime. The strongest pump absorption is observed at the wavelength of 405 nm. Variation of pump power and fiber length results in the demonstration of broad-bandwidth fluorescence with spectral widths up to 301 nm (at -10 dB). The measured fluorescence spectra cover the wavelength range from ∼458 nm to ∼819 nm with spectral power densities of up to 2.4 nW/nm.

During last decades there has been considerable interest in developing a fiber amplifier for the ... more During last decades there has been considerable interest in developing a fiber amplifier for the 1.3-$$\upmu $$μm spectral region that is comparable in performance to the Er-doped fiber amplifier operating near 1.55 $$\upmu $$μm. It is due to the fact that most of the existing fiber-optic communication systems that dominate terrestrial networks could be used for the data transmission in O-band (1260–1360 nm), where dispersion compensation is not required, providing a low-cost increase of the capacity. In this regard, significant efforts of the research laboratories were initially directed towards the study of the praseodymium-doped fluoride fiber amplifier having high gain and output powers at the desired wavelengths. Mode-locked fibre laser as a dissipative system is characterized by rich forms of soliton interac... more Mode-locked fibre laser as a dissipative system is characterized by rich forms of soliton interaction, which take place via internal energy exchange through noisy background in the presence of dispersion and nonlinearity. The result of soliton interaction was either stationary-localized or chaotically-oscillated soliton complexes, which have been shown before as stand-alone in the cavity. Here we report on a new form of solitons complex observed in Bi-doped mode-locked fibre laser operated at 1450 nm. The solitons are arranged in two different group types contemporizing in the cavity: one pulse group propagates as bound solitons with fixed phase relation and interpulse position eventuated in 30 dB spectrum modulation depth; while the other pulses form a bunch with continuously and chaotically moving solitons. The article describes both experimental and theoretical considerations of this effect.

It is now almost twenty-five years since the first Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) was demons... more It is now almost twenty-five years since the first Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) was demonstrated. Currently, the EDFA is one of the most important elements widely used in different kinds of fiber-optic communication systems. However, driven by a constantly increasing demand, the network traffic, growing exponentially over decades, will lead to the overload of these systems ("capacity crunch") because the operation of the EDFA is limited to a spectral region of 1530-1610 nm. It will require a search for new technologies and, in this respect, the development of optical amplifiers for new spectral regions can be a promising approach. Most of fiber-optic amplifiers are created using rare-earth-doped materials. As a result, wide bands in shorter (1150-1530 nm) and longer wavelength (1600-1750 nm) regions with respect to the gain band of Er-doped fibers are still uncovered. ABSTRACT We have studied the effects of preform fabrication procedure and ytterbium and erbium co... more ABSTRACT We have studied the effects of preform fabrication procedure and ytterbium and erbium concentrations on the efficiency of excitation transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ and lasing on erbium transitions in the range 1.53–1.61 μm in phosphosilicate glass fibers. The results indicate that the fabrication of fiber preforms by different MCVD-based processes has no effect on the excitation transfer efficiency. In the ranges 0.07–0.4wt % Er3+ and ∼ 0.4–8 wt % Yb3+ (Yb/Er ratio from ∼ 5 to 40), the excitation transfer efficiency is determined by the ytterbium concentration and is essentially independent of erbium concentration.

This letter experimentally shows that stable Q-switched pulses with a temporal width of similar to 1.8 mu s at a repetition rate of similar to 65 kHz can be obtained from a simple, all-fiberized Fabry-Perot-type cavity without using a saturable absorber. The tuning capability of the temporal characteristics of the output pulses depending on pump power is also investigated.
