This is the first confirmed record of a 430 mm TL spotted sicklefish, Drepane punctata (Linnaeus,... more This is the first confirmed record of a 430 mm TL spotted sicklefish, Drepane punctata (Linnaeus, 1758), in the Gulf of Oman collected in August 2021. Here, we describe a hyperostotic deformity in the head, maxilla and premaxilla, dorsal fin, caudal fin rays, and neural and haemal spines of some vertebrae. In the head, the occipital and supraoccipital crests were swollen. Also, we compare morphometric and meristic data with other specimens from other geographic regions. Novel hyperostosis characteristics found for D. punctata are compared to previously documented instances.

The freshwater blenny Salaria fluviatilis (Asso y del Rio, 1801) is a freshwater species that fav... more The freshwater blenny Salaria fluviatilis (Asso y del Rio, 1801) is a freshwater species that favors demersal environments. Individuals of this species live in rivers and brooks of Europe, North Africa and Israel. Three specimens of S. fluviatilis (TL 80.82 mm, 60.98 mm and 64.14 mm) collected from Kızılırmak River – Kesikköprü Bridge, Turkey during July 2021 showed deformities in both pectoral and pelvic fins. Degeneration was noted in the pectoral fin rays particularly the last ventral two soft rays (soft ray no. 13 and 14 counting from dorsal to ventral). They also look smaller than those in the normal specimen do. The degeneration in the soft ray no. 13 is less severe than soft ray no. 14. The x-ray of the abnormal specimen showed no other pectoral fin rays were deformed and the pectoral girdle was normal. In both specimens of S. fluviatilis that showed pelvic fin rays degeneration, the whole left pelvic fin and the right pelvic fin were completely degenerated and no soft rays a...

The species has not previously been mentioned as introduced to the Tigris-Euphrates River basin. There are two possibilities for this occurrence, first, the natural dispersal from adjacent Turkey and second, the aquaculture introduction. Both possibilities were discussed. Confirmation for the origin of the sporadic appearance of individuals of this species will wait for the appearance of more specimens in the inland waters of Iraq.
During the study of the health of the fish species in the vicinity of Jubail City, Saudi Arabia, ... more During the study of the health of the fish species in the vicinity of Jubail City, Saudi Arabia, 3 specimens of Diplodus cervinus omanensis and 3 specimens of Acanthopagrus catenula were collected by fishermen using 30 x 10 m drifting gill nets of 25 mm mesh size and handed over to Ministry of Agriculture officials through their twice a week visits to fish landing areas and fish markets in Jubail. Diplodus cervinus omanensis (Oman porgy) and Acanthopagrus catenula (bridled seabream) represent new records for the Eastern coasts of the Arabian Peninsula and Saudi Arabian waters. Specimens of A. catenula were previously reported from the Iraqi marine waters, therefore, this is the 2nd appearance for this species in this part of the world. This study verifies parts of the diversity of the coastal fish communities of the eastern coasts of the Saudi Arabian waters, but also highlights that a large proportion of this area (the norther Arabian coast) has not been explored.
During the process of studying some morphological characters of fish found in the food of the Aus... more During the process of studying some morphological characters of fish found in the food of the Australasian gannet Morus serrator breeding at Horuhoru Rock and Mahuki islands in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, one carangid specimen of fish species Trachurus declivis out of the 25 fish specimens examined revealed seven small plastic particles in its stomach of different colours: black, red, blue, green, and transparent. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to identify the compositions of the particles as low and high density polyethylene, poly (methyl methacrylate), polypropylene, and a copolymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile, and methacrylamide. The plastic particles comprised several different shapes and sizes, ranging between 4.5 and 10 mm, and are therefore categorized as micro-and mesoplastic fragments.
