These monuments are closely related to the Venetian rule, a time during which Crete constituted the largest and most important colony of the Republic of Venice in the Aegean on which based her hopes for the maintenance of her power in the eastern Mediterranean. The walls of the fortresses witnessed some of the most crucial events of military history. On their walls and surviving portions can be made out the traces of their turbulent past. Together with the surviving examples of building and artistic activity ̶ mansions, villas, decorative doorways, archways, fountains, loggiae (clubs of the Nobles), wall paintings ̶ are evidence of the historical and cultural identity of the place and integral part of Greek cultural heritage. The book apart from the specialized text is accompanied by artistic engravings and representative and rich photographic material.

On the one hand, tourism can preserve cultures, resurrect forgotten traditions and prevent cultural stagnation. On the other hand, tourism can challenge existing values, social norms, traditions and behavior, and this can lead to situations of conflict. In extreme cases, resistance or violence can be the result. For the majority of the time, it would seem that as long as tourism delivers the economic and social benefits it frequently promises, problems are often tolerated and some measure of conflict is accepted. However, whenever tourism brings cultures together, whether freely or forced, a range of complex issues are invoked such as the nature of cultural identity, social and economic power relations, legal and moral rights and management responsibilities. This book examines the changing relationships between tourism and host cultures and explores the reasons why and how conflicts emerge, in a series of detailed case studies from many parts of the globe including the United Kingdom,

Ever since the Second World War Greece has had an inflated public sector which inevitably became bureaucratic and unproductive. In the period 1975–1985 this sector became involved in areas normally associated with private initiative — even in fields where the private sector was very active, e.g. trade — and eventually controlled more than half of the economy. This period had great significance for Greece. The fall of the dictatorship in 1974 was followed by a series of transformations, also in the political sphere. In 1981 the socialist party won the elections and — with a small interval — still governs the country. The policy followed in those years was in favour of the expansion of the public sector and against privatization. Traditional activities were in decline while a great number of factory buildings remained unused.1

It is a joint effort of a team of researchers who produced the background studies and material and collaborated with the institutions participating in the project. The publication presents some of the vital issues related to the many challenges cultural managers-and especially those involved in transnational cultural cooperation projects-have to face that emerged in a multifaceted career environment where a new set of combination of competencies and skills is needed. In light of this a certification process for training courses has been designed in line with the European Qualification Framework for the development of human capital in the lifelong Learning era.

The cultural significance of these phenomena was broadened with respect both to folk culture and to certain forms of the urban culture and literature of the Balkan people, and in both its contemporary and earlier forms.
A review of the papers presented in this volume reveals that they fall into three main groups:
a. Those in which the pair laughter-tears is examined together, and eventually in dialectical relationship;
b. Those in which laughter is examined alone;
c. Those in which tears are examined alone.
Moreover the psychological (and also sociological and broader cultural ) phenomena may be considered on two levels : the level of custom and the level of literature. This does not mean that the two levels may not intersect.
