The paper presents a novel non-invasive microwave technique for monitoring salt concentration in ... more The paper presents a novel non-invasive microwave technique for monitoring salt concentration in pure water. The technique is based on near field analysis of open ended coaxial probe (OECP) sensor with material under test (MUT) using plane wave spectrum theory. The proposed technique is compared with experimental results for various concentration of salt solution between 1GHz to 10GHz range. The computed result shows good agreement with experiment. The microwave technique shows better result at lower microwave frequency as compared to higher frequency. At 2GHz range the response of the technique and measurement shows a linear relationship with the salt concentration. The technique shows the potential of extracting the physical parameter, like permittivity, of the salty water.

This work presents the application of precision agriculture based on cyber physical systems (PACP... more This work presents the application of precision agriculture based on cyber physical systems (PACPS). We implemented and tested the essential components of PACPS, namely, moisture sensing, actuating a solenoid valve based on a lower threshold value of sensor data as well and generation of actuation signals. Further, we have also implemented, transmission of data to a remote server. We have observed that PACPS is more efficient compared to traditional agricultural practices in terms of physical labour and the total cost. Our laboratory experimentation and subsequent observations also reveal that the system ensures consistent nourishment to the roots of the crops and therefore reduces soil erosion compared to traditional methods.

Overvoltage is a common phenomenon in AC motor drives that are fed by long cables from PWM inverters, as they use Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) with small rise time and fall time. This paper proposes an Artificial Neural Network based system to predict overvoltage at the motor terminal with long cable using the parameters cable length and motor capacity.

In this article, we present Vector Fitting Algorithm (VFA) to derive the rational function approx... more In this article, we present Vector Fitting Algorithm (VFA) to derive the rational function approximation model of Bandpass and Baseband systems in presence of Noise. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Identification error $(\mathbf{C}\!\!\!\!{\scriptstyle{{}^-}}\ \mathbf{p})$ is calculated to analyze the modeling accuracy of VFA, for different orders of the system and for different SNR (signal to noise ratio) criteria. VFA is found to be more noise resilient with regard to system identification for higher order systems compared to lower order systems due to sharper frequency cut-off characteristics and corresponding noise suppression for higher order systems. It was also found that, for the same order and SNR, baseband systems have less modeling errors, when compared to bandpass systems.
This paper presents design tools and optimization techniques useful for the design of radio front... more This paper presents design tools and optimization techniques useful for the design of radio front-ends consisting of integrated active and passive parts. The advantage of hybrid active-passive design technique is demonstrated by highlighting the results of a slot matched transistor amplifier. An efficient design of similar hybrid active-passive circuits needs computationally efficient design tools for the active and passive components interfaced using powerful optimisation tools. Synthesis of aperture microstrip antennas modeled using transmission line models and interfaced with Genetic Algorithm optimization tool will be presented as a part of this objective.

Wireless channel modeling is a challenging problem for near ground communications primarily due to significant attenuation owing to the proximity to the surface of the earth. In this paper, we estimate the wireless channel coefficients and compute the RMSE to ascertain the accuracy. Using the corrected channel parameters, we characterize the BER of the wireless channel in AWGN for a BPSK communication system using a simulation based approach. We use Software Defined Radio (SDR) with GNU Radio, which is an open-source software development tool for generation of baseband signals, defining modulation formats and RF system parameters. Our results show that the corrected channel parameters from our system yield simulated BER values that are very close to the theoretical values

The proposed approach, enables us to derive optimal PA models in a short time, thereby saving valuable computational time and resources. The efficiency of the proposed approach is validated by modeling the behavior of a class AB amplifier using an optimal generalised memory polynomial (GMP) model determined using ABC optimization technique.

Detection of sinusoidal signals embedded in noise is a pertinent problem in applications such as ... more Detection of sinusoidal signals embedded in noise is a pertinent problem in applications such as radar and sonar, communication systems and defense, to name a few. This paper, describes the detection of a real sinusoid in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) using the Differential Evolution Algorithm (DE). The performance of DE is evaluated for different sampling rates and also for different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). The proposed DE which combines two DE strategies enhances the detection performance compared to the original DE algorithm. We show that the detection performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to previously reported methods, especially at low SNR.

The module occupies lesser area for integration, operates on lower power and supports higher data rates than conventional modulator units of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The scope of a miniature and low power modulator primarily finds many applications in satellite communication as the proposed system is a frugal alternative to implement most communication applications that work at longer distances and for wider coverage areas.

A high performance, waveguide E-Plane filter has been designed for Ka-band Ground Station Applica... more A high performance, waveguide E-Plane filter has been designed for Ka-band Ground Station Applications to restrict the band of frequencies. E-plane filter with all metal insert configuration has been selected for the application to obtain low insertion loss. Inductive irises are fabricated on thin metallic structure with high degree of fabrication accuracy and the strip is sandwiched between two waveguide halves form the E-plane filter assembly. Fabrication accuracy of 10 microns is demanded by the high frequency filter to meet the stringent electrical requirements of the Ground Station system. Silver plating has been carried out interior surfaces of the waveguide filter to reduce the insertion loss. Low loss of 0.25 dB is aimed at 26.25 GHz center frequency with 1.5 GHz pass band. Stopband rejection of 80 dB is obtained at 30 GHz frequency, at which high power uplink signals are transmitted from the Ground station for communicating with GEO Stationary Satellites.

The senior citizens and patients suffering from genetic disorders like muscular dystrophy are more likely to be prone to falls as their muscles weaken over the period of time. Apart from the fall itself, most significant consequences are generally the long lie periods associated with falls. This can cause severe side effects and can be dangerous especially if the person is alone or becomes unconscious after falling. So there is a need for a robust fall detector which is able to accurately detect fall and alert the concerned people for assistance so that the adverse effects of long lie period can be mitigated. This project aims in building an efficient fall detection system using neural network. The key to any fall detection system is the algorithm used. This paper proposes the use of machine learning technique specifically, neural network for the classification of an activity as a fall or non fall event.

RF Power Amplifiers (PA) consumes a major part of available DC power in any wireless system. This... more RF Power Amplifiers (PA) consumes a major part of available DC power in any wireless system. This article deals with behavioral modeling of RF Power Amplifiers using artificial neural networks. The developed model enables us to find energy consumption for a signal passing through the PA for a given Gain and maximum allowable distortion. The proposed modeling approach also enables us to linearize the PA by incorporating an inverse model of the PA in the baseband signal processor for compensating the distortion. The PA model can also be used as a sub-system model for evaluating the error performance of the overall system in terms of bit error rate (BER). The modeling method is validated for a class AB power amplifier design.
