Effect of ionic strength and cationic species of contacting solution on phosphate sorption was st... more Effect of ionic strength and cationic species of contacting solution on phosphate sorption was studied on surface (0–0.15 m) soil samples of Camborthids and Haplusteps of semi-arid region of Haryana. The samples of each soil were equilibrated for 48 hrs at 25±2°C with aqueous solution of KH2PO4 containing 0 to 465 mg P mL−1. The amount of phosphate sorbed (x/m) by soils at different solution P concentrations varied from 18.3 to 2585.8 mg g−1 at 0.001 M, 18.8 to 2666.2 mg g−1 at 0.01M and 18.9 to 2727.8 mg g−1 at 0.1M ionic strength of CaCl2. The corresponding values of x/m at these ionic strengths varied from 18.2 to 2346.6, 18.6 to 2446.2 and 18.7 to 2536.2 mg g−1 with MgCl2 and 17.7 to 2283.6, 18.0 to 2307.5 and 18.0 to 2325.2 mg g−1 with NaCl. Phosphate sorption (x/m), XAd and Kd increased with increase in ionic strength. Apple is the most important temperate fruit crop of the north-western Himalayan region in India. ... more Apple is the most important temperate fruit crop of the north-western Himalayan region in India. It accounts for 46 per cent of the total area under fruit crops and 76 per cent of the total fruit production of Himachal Pradesh. The present study analyzed resource use and technical efficiency of Apple in Himachal Pradesh by taking the representative sample of 120 farmers from the four districts viz. Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu and Mandi. Result analyzed that R2 value in translog was found 76.4 per cent more than Cobb-Douglas production function due to three interaction terms were found significant in the translog production function. Mean technical efficiency was found 81.82 per cent by stochastic frontier analysis indicating the scope of improvement in variable controlled by farmers. Through simple linear regression, it was found that technical efficiency was positively related with age of farmer, education, family size and experience in farming and negatively with the farm size. To study the effect of different cations on phosphate sorption, the original soil samples were made homoionic with respect to Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4+, K+ and Na+ using their chloride salts. The samples of each soil except Na-soil were equilibrated for 48 hrs at 25±2°C with aqueous solution of NaH2PO4 containing 0 to 465 μg P mL−1. The Na-soil was equilibrated with solution of KH2PO4. Phosphate sorption was satisfactorily (r2 = 0.980 to 0.996, P= 0.01) described by Freundlich equation in the entire range of P concentration in all the soils. The x/m, XAd, Kd, ‘k’ and ’n’ for P sorption of K-, NH4- and Na-soils were lower than Ca- and Mg-soils. Studies on seven Indian potato cultivars (‘Kufri Chipsona-1’, ‘Kufri Chipsona-2’, ‘Kufri Chandram... more Studies on seven Indian potato cultivars (‘Kufri Chipsona-1’, ‘Kufri Chipsona-2’, ‘Kufri Chandramukhi’, ‘Kufri Badshah’, ‘Kufri Jyoti’, ‘Kufri Giriraj’ and ‘Kufri Jawahar’) revealed that the tubers of potato cultivars viz., ‘Kufri Chipsona-2’, ‘Kufri Chipsona-1’, ‘Kufri Chandramukhi’ had low content of reducing sugars and high content of dry matter, proteins and specific gravity were found more suitable for processing into flour with high yields. The potato flour of these cultivars resulted in lower non-enzymatic browning with better quality retention during storage period of 6 months.

Experiment was conducted for preparation of water melon rind candy using different levels of osmotic treatments viz. O1 -50 g sugar/100g rind, O2-75 g sugar/100 g rind, O3-100 g sugar/100g rind, O4-100 g 60°Brix syrup/100 g rind and O5-100 g 70° Brix syrup/100 g rind (Factor 1) and acidity viz. A1-0.10%, A2-0.20% and A3-0.30% (Factor 2). Evaluation of maturity of compost has been widely recognized as one of the most important problems concerning composting process and application of this product to land. In order to provide and review the information found in the literature about composting of different organic waste materials, the first part of this chapter explains basic concepts of composting process. Then a summary of physical, chemical and biological parameters affecting stability and maturity of high quality compost prepared from organic waste materials.
