It is distinctive in that it is welded out of two parts. It came to the Museum as part of the numismatics collection of the Lithuanian Scientific Society, which operated in Vilnius from 1907 to 1940. It belonged to the collection of Konstantinas Stasys (1880- 1942) and it can be traced back to the Vilnius hoard (Rybiškės, end of the 14th century/1930). The bar's mass is 107.1 grams, its length is 126.5 mm, its width is 11 mm, and its height is 11 mm. In the bar, there arc three cuts, the depths of which range from 6 to 7,5 mm. For making these cuts, a chisel - type tool was used; the working angle of which was 65-70°. Briefly discussing the possible functions of the cuts into Lithuanian bars, the most likely arc the following three hypotheses: 1) in some Lithuanian bars, there are symbolic cuts...

The collection was first mentioned in the sources in 1788. The fate of the collection is unknown. The article presents a list of the collection drawn by General Gruzhevsky in 1807 of the objects divided into 26 groups: it starts with coins, proceeds to medals and gold, silver and copper coins from different countries of Europe. The collection included also antique (Roman) silver and copper coins. The medals were grouped on the basis of secular and religious occasions and dedications. Some of the medals were Russian or Polish. The collection included banknotes too, it is very probable that those were treasury notes of the Greater Polish Uprising of 1794, as well as copies of the medals cast in tin. The entire collection was built by acquiring individual items or pr...

A need has therefore emerged to collect information about these objects as well as organize special reviews. The present review provides information presented by 26 Lithuanian museums about numismatic objects acquired in 2004-2005 and numismatic collections owned on 1 January 2006. This information is evaluated within a broader context of data collected from museums in 2000–2005. This is in order to observe the trends of change in numismatic collections of museums. In 2004–2005 museums acquired 18035 objects, most of them coins (8194 units). Medals and awards (4991 units), badges (3344 units), banknotes (680 units), seals (464 units), tokens (27 units) and various other objects related to numismatics (335 units) were also acquired. Summarizing the data of Lithuanian museums from a longer, five-year period (2000–2005), it can be stated that the total number of numismatic objects in museums has in...

The said publication is the second volume of the planned six-volume “Enciklopedinis Bankininkystės ir Komercijos Žinynas”. In 1997 the first volume - “Lietuvių-Anglų Kalbų Aiškinamasis Bankinių ir Komercinių Terminų Žodynas” was published. Upon commencing the use of the said book, certain errors and discrepancies were noticed. Since neither analogous dictionaries nor publications, supplementing or clarifying the said dictionary were later published, it is viable to get a closer look of the said publication, draw the readers’ attention to the errors and supplement the information. The dictionary provides more than 1300 terms (excluding their meanings, the amount of which, in certain cases, is more than 40). Truth be told, sometimes it is difficult to identify the origins of one or...

It is said that there are around 500,000 numismatics exhibits in Lithuanian museums. The majority of them are kept in museum vaults and only a small part of them are in expositions, thematic exhibits. It was noticed that there is insufficient amount of experts who could evaluate the exhibits. Moreover, we have little information and experience to analyse properly the treasures of numismatics. It is stated that the main base of analysis of numismatics is in the museums. As it is necessary to estimate the status of the numismatics collections and possible compilation trends, the publication NUMIZMATIKA starts to publish reviews on numismatic collections, kept in museums. This information shall give possibilities to better acknowledge the experience of colleagues when sorting out the numismatics exhibits. It is widely believed that in the future it will be possible to get effective ideas and knowled...
