The article discusses curriculum issues and pedagogical techniques connected to developing Big Data competencies. The following objectives are targeted: The importance and impact of making rational, data driven decisions in the Big Data era; Complexity of developing and exploring a Big Data Application in solving real life problems; Learning skills to adopt and explore emerging technologies; and Knowledge and skills to interpret and communicate results of data analysis via combining domain knowledge with system expertise. The curriculum covers: The two general uses of Big Data Analytics Applications, which are well distinguished from the point of view of end-user's objectives (presenting and visualizing data via aggregation and summarization [data warehousing: data cubes, dash boards, etc.] and learning from Data [data mining techniqu...

The infobroker concept is developed and the required knowledge and skills for the infobroker su ccessful professional performance are identified. The research findings are based on an extensive investigation and analysis of existing forms of information bro kering and their evolvement and reshaping in the context of the rapid dof computer-based information and communication technologies, and Internet, in particular. The research reported here is limited to the market of information services in Bulgaria - a small, developing, non-English speaking country. The research objectives were to define the critical factors for professional su ccess, including required knowledge, skills, and professional attitude, and to specify the job perspectives for an infobroker. Our further research aims at developing of a curri...

These models are realistic representation of the market situation, where purchasing decisions are made based on the assessment of all available offers and selecting the one that meets at most the buyer's needs. The paper emphasizes the case of two competing products offered to a group of potential clients and studies the risk of misinforming and its effect on the purchase decisions. In addition, models for the evaluation of the risk of sellers are also proposed.

The phenomenon of Big Data arose in the last years and offered new dimensions of digital divide: the challenge that the human society faces since the appearance of computer technology. Objectives of this chapter are to highlight problems and barriers in learning from Big Data and to initiate discussion on the ways to overcome those new challenges. The chapter tries to define the “Big Data Phenomenon,” to identify the phases and activities in the process of learning from data, and to relate them to learning from Big Data. As a result, a paradigm of competences and barriers for acquiring Big Data literacy are proposed as a new dimension of literacy in dividing the human society.

Social networks define the structure of a population of individuals. Diverse and dynamic environments lead to evolution of social networks as informing media. The Internet revolution affected especially the way people communicate and it naturally produced a new infrastructure for maintaining social networks. Different topologies of social networks are considered as different paths of knowledge diffusion. The paper addresses the challenges and opportunities this new infrastructure provides. It also argues for needs of “social network literacy” for successful and fruitful use of technology in solving the knowledge acquiring problem.
