ADE, a result of domestic, economic, and agricultural activities in and around human settlements,... more ADE, a result of domestic, economic, and agricultural activities in and around human settlements, are noted for their extraordinary fertility and resilience and for the significant quantities of organic carbon, much in the form of charcoal. The deepest and most extensive areas of ADE are generally located on the bluffs of major rivers adjacent to floodplains, but significant areas of ADE have also been found in floodplains and in headwater and interfluvial areas. Our research aims to shed light on the distribution of modified soils in distinct regions of the Amazon in relation to landforms and the environment. Although research on ADE has led to a proliferation of studies on charcoal in soil management and the development of a ‘biochar’ industry that promotes the incorporation of charcoal into the soil for the dual purpose of improving fertility and sequestering carbon, there is a notable lack of research attempting to quantify the carbon over the scale of a site or region in Amazonia. We undertook this challenge in the Upper Xingu region of southeastern Amazonia in partnership with the local Kuikuro indigenous community who have shared their valuable traditional knowledge on the creation and management of ADE. We used data from over 3500 soil samples from diverse contexts, both ancient and modern, that we collected and analyzed over the past two decades for organic carbon and a range of other chemical and physical properties. Dark earth samples from profiles down to 1 m depth in archaeological sites ranged from 20% to 150% more OC than unmodified forest soil and dark earth profiles in current and historic villages ranged from 20-90% more. We used the results from soil sample transects to estimate the carbon in landuse zones within and surrounding modern, historic, and ancient settlement sites. In continuing work, we are attempting to use satellite remote sensing and artificial intelligence with ground truth data to extrapolate our results across the Upper Xingu region and beyond.

We split this sample into 13 tomographic bins (Δ z = 0.05); angular power spectra were calculated using a Pseudo-C_ℓ estimator, and covariance matrices were estimated using log-normal simulated maps. Cosmological constraints obtained from these data were combined with constraints from Planck CMB experiment as well as the JLA supernovae compilation. Considering a wCDM cosmological model measured on scales up to k_max = 0.07h Mpc^-1, we constrain a constant dark energy equation-of-state with a ∼ 4% error at the 1-σ level: w_0 = -0.993^+0.046_-0.043, together with Ω_m = 0.330± 0.012, Ω_b = 0.0505 ± 0.002, S_8 ≡σ_8 √(Ω_m/0.3) = 0.863 ± 0.016, and h = 0.661 ± 0.012. The lensing signal is measured around satellites in groups with masses in the range [10^13, 5x10^14]h^-1M_sun, and is found to agree well with theoretical expectation. Fitting the data with a truncated NFW profile, we obtain an average subhalo mass of log M_sub= 11.68 ± 0.67 for satellites whose projected distances to central galaxies are in the range [0.1, 0.3] h^-1Mpc, and log M_sub= 11.68 ± 0.76 for satellites with projected halo-centric distance in [0.3, 0.5] h^-1Mpc. The best-fit subhalo masses are comparable to the truncated subhalo masses assigned to satellite galaxies using abundance matching and about 5 to 10 times higher than the average stellar mass of the lensing satellite galaxies.

This analysis demonstrates the feasibility of using peak statistics in cosmological studies. For our measurements, we considered peaks with signal-to-noise ratio in the range of ν=[3,6]. For a flat ΛCDM model with only (Ω_ m, σ_8) as free parameters, we constrained the parameters of the following relation Σ_8=σ_8(Ω_ m/0.27)^α to be: Σ_8=0.82 ± 0.03 and α=0.43± 0.02. The α value found is considerably smaller than the one measured in two-point and three-point cosmic shear correlation analyses, showing a significant complement of peak statistics to standard weak lensing cosmological studies. The derived constraints on (Ω_ m, σ_8) are fully consistent with the ones from either WMAP9 or Planck. From the weak lensing peak abundances alone, we obtained marginalised mean values of Ω_ m=0.38^+0.27_-0.24 and σ_8=0.81± 0....

The mean central tSZ signal for the full sample is y ~ 1.8 * 10^(-7) and we detect tSZ emission out to ~30 arcmin, which is well beyond the 10 arcmin angular resolution of the y map and well beyond the virial radii of the LRGs. We compare the measured profile with predictions from the cosmo-OWLS suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. This comparison agrees well for models that include feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN), but not with hydrodynamic models without this energetic feedback mechanism. This suggests that an additional heating mechanism is required over SNe feedback and star formation to explain the y data profile. We also compare our results with predictions based on the halo model with a universal pressure pr...
Galaxy group masses are important to relate these systems with the dark matter halo hosts. Howeve... more Galaxy group masses are important to relate these systems with the dark matter halo hosts. However, deriving accurate mass estimates is particularly challenging for low-mass galaxy groups. Moreover, calibration of observational mass-proxies using weak-lensing estimates have been mainly focused on massive clusters. We present here a study of halo masses for a sample of galaxy groups identified according to a spectroscopic catalogue, spanning a wide mass range. The main motivation of our analysis is to assess mass estimates provided by the galaxy group catalogue derived through an abundance matching luminosity technique. We derive total halo mass estimates according to a stacking weak-lensing analysis. Our study allows to test the accuracy of mass estimates based on this technique as a proxy for the halo masses of large group samples. Lensing profiles are computed combining the groups in different bins of abundance matching mass, richness, and redshift. Fitted lensing masses correlate...

The effect of these toxins at neuromuscular junction lends themselves to neurological diseases of muscle overactivity, particularly abnormalities of muscle control. There are seven serotypes of the toxin, each with a specific activity at the molecular level. Currently, serotypes A (in two preparations) and B are available for clinical purpose, and they have proved to be safe and effective for the treatment of dystonia, spasticity, headache, and other CNS disorders in which muscle hyperactivity gives rise to symptoms. Although initially thought to inhibit acetylcholine release only at the neuromuscular junction, botulinum toxins are now recognized to inhibit acetylcholine release at autonomic cholinergic nerve terminals, as well as peripheral release of neuro-transmitters involved in pain regulation. Its effects are transient and nondestructive, and largely limi...
