In particular, it will focus on the interaction between these vehicles and new multi-image software products, considering the consequences that this system provoked on themethodologyoftraditionalphotogrammetryappliedinthearchaeologicalfield. The purpose of this work is the individuation of the potentialities in the working approach on one side of the UAVsas a mean to acquire metrical information and on the other side of multi-image software products for theprocessingoftheacquired data.Inotherterms, different techniques arecompared andintegrated, inorder tounderstandthepossibilitiesofthisnewmethodology. Finally, the system proposed here has great advantages in terms of versatility, manoeuvrability and costs. Moreover, it is easy to use and produces good results that are interesting as both research and documentation toolsduetotheirrichnessofinf...

Each situation is a case on its own and it requires the intervention and the integration of methods and tools that work with non homogeneous precision, but that need to communicate with each other within a single reference system. Often, due to the complexity of contexts and the buildings’ geometry it is necessary to use the most recent structural techniques, encouraging research both during data collection and during further elaboration processes. It is indeed necessary to integrate different survey techniques in order to obtain a complete documentation of the object studied, as the Laboratorio di Fotogrammetria of the Università IUAV di Venezia has been doing for the last years, as a specific area of research. The aim of this article is to focus on the application of new technologies and methodologies in delicate contexts such as areas stroke by earthquakes. This article describes the first results of a survey campaign on the Church of San Geminiano in San Felice sul Panaro (Modena) that was almost completely destroyed by the last earthquake. In this case, different tools and methodologies have been used in order to create an integrated system of all the most recent technologies used in Geomatics. Authors: M. Ballarin, V. Buttolo, E. The technological growth regarding both mechanical instruments and digital high-resolution sensors allowed the development of suitable tools for the digitization of historical maps and creation of more accurate digital models; therefore, by now, the use of automatic systems for acquisition of digital data is continuously spreading. In the work described in this paper we used a robotic arm (UR10), on which we mounted a digital camera in order to acquire high-resolution images of any object following a regular grid. The arm movement was programmed to keep the rotation angles of the camera constant while shifting it at pre-defined quantities along the two axes. The tests performed demonstrated that we could obtain a three-dimensional model with an accuracy below the millimetre in an almost automatic way.

The recording of three-dimensional metrical data of an asset allows one to preserve and monitor, but also to understand and explain the history and cultural heritage shared. In essence, it constitutes a digital archive of the state of an artefact, which can be used for various purposes, be remodeled, or kept safely stored. With the introduction of 3D printing, digital data can once again take on material form and become physical objects from the corresponding mathematical models in a relatively short time and often at low cost. This possibility has led to a different consideration of the concept of virtual data, no longer necessarily linked to simple visual fruition. The importance of creating high-resol...

The epicentres were recorded respectively in Finale Emilia (magnitude 5.9 Ml) and Medolla (magnitude 5.8 Ml) in the province of Modena, though the earthquake was formed by a series of seismic shakes located in the district of the Emilian Po Valley, mainly in the provinces of Modena, Ferrara, Mantova, Reggio Emilia, Bologna and Rovigo. Many monuments in the city of Mantova were hit by the earthquake and, among these, Palazzo Ducale with the well-known Castello di San Giorgio which host the noteworthy “Camera degli Sposi”. This building, the most famous of the city, was so damaged that it was closed for more than one year after the earthquake. The emblem of the Palace and Mantova itself, the previously cited “Camera degli Sposi” realized by Andrea Mantegna, was damaged and all the economic and social life of the city was deeply affected. Immediately after the ear...

This research is focused on the analysis of the potential of a close range aerial photogrammetry ... more This research is focused on the analysis of the potential of a close range aerial photogrammetry system, which is accessible both in economic terms and in terms of simplicity of use. In particular the Go Pro Hero3 Black Edition and the Parrot Ar. Drone 2.0 were studied. There are essentially two limitations to the system and they were found for both the instruments used. Indeed, the frames captured by the Go Pro are subject to great distortion and consequently pose numerous calibration problems. On the other hand, the limitation of the system lies in the difficulty of maintaining a flight configuration suitable for photogrammetric purposes in unfavourable environmental conditions. The aim of this research is to analyse how far the limitations highlighted can influence the precision of the survey and consequent quality of the results obtained. To this end, the integrated GoPro and Parrot system was used during a survey campaign on the Altilia archaeological site, in Molise. The data obtained was compared with that gathered by more traditional methods, such as the laser scanner. The system was employed in the field of archaeology because here the question of cost often has a considerable importance and the metric aspect is frequently subordinate to the qualitative and interpretative aspects. Herein one of the products of these systems; the orthophoto will be analysed, which is particularly useful in archaeology, especially in situations such as this dig in which there aren’t many structures in elevation present. The system proposed has proven to be an accessible solution for producing an aerial documentation, which adds the excellent quality of the result to metric data for which the precision is known.
