Extinctions associated with early settlement of the Pacific have been well documented in the palaeorecord for plants (Prebble and Dowe, 2007), birds ( [Holdaway, 1989], [Athens et al., 2002] and [Steadman, 2006]), amphibians (Holdaway, 1989), reptiles (Pregill and Steadman ...

Water quality, forest structure, and the size distribution and relative abundance of the mud crab, Scylla serrata and the clam Anodontia edulenta were studied. Water quality parameters differed significantly between sites as follows: pH (F=16.8; df=3,138; p<0.000), turbidity (KW-H=22.07; df=3,162; p<0.0006), salinity (F=19.8; df=3,366; p<0.000), dissolved oxygen (KW-H=13.4; df=3, 169; p<0.0012) and temperature (F=4.33; df=3,157; p<0.006). The total mean density of all trees was 2,077±225 stems ha^(-1) and differed significantly between sites (KW-H=9.3; df=3; p<0.02). The total mean basal area was 18.9±2.76 m^2ha^(-1) and differed significantly between sites (KW-H36.2; df=3; p<0.000). The total mean volume of all trees was 679 m^3ha^(-1) ± 201 m^3ha^1. The total mean density of saplings was 1,234 ± 297 sap...

The ceremony, more commonly referred to as Omengat throughout Palau and Ngasech on the island of Angaur is central to the traditional exchange system of Palau. There are concerns that through colonization, decolonization and now globalization, Palauans are losing connections to ancestral customs. However, the First Child Birth ceremony is still widely practiced and can serve as a case-study regarding the effects of globalization. This paper reviews the various biocultural aspects of the ceremony such as bathing, food, construction, attire, plant use and the diaspora in light of the effects of globalization. The findings show that the ceremony is hybridized tending towards the traditional. Using a collaborative research model to further delve into the effects of outside influence, w...
An official checklist of the endemic plant species of Palau has been long awaited, and is present... more An official checklist of the endemic plant species of Palau has been long awaited, and is presented here for the first time. For each species a substrate limitation, growth form, and relative abundance is listed. In addition an IUCN red list assessment was conducted using all available data. For over half of the endemic species there is insufficient data to provide a red listing status however an expected minimum number of threatened plants out of the total is inferred. Approximately 15% of Palau's endemic plants are believed to be only known from the type collection and many more only known from a few collections. These taxa however may now be prioritized and targeted for future inventory and research. The taxonomic robustness of several of these taxa is questionable and it is expected that more endemic species will be lost to synonymy in the future. Previous estimations have significantly over-estimated the rate of plant endemism in Palau (e.g., 194). Here it is established th...
