I have been a fan, follower, and sometimes contributor to India Development Review (IDR). I consider it one of the most important communication platforms for the development sector in India. I read this article on IDR today: https://shorturl.at/5BtXY. It is highly recommended reading for those interested in grassroots, community-facing, and community-centric development organisations in today's India. Below are a few points that came to my mind while reading the piece. This was first posted as a comment below the article. What is the basis of the claim that "Almost every grassroots nonprofit aspires to expand its social impact so that its services and efforts can reach more people"? Many grassroots organisations seek to deepen their work with the communities they work with, but they are not provided sufficient resources to do so. Donors seem to seek a wider spread at the cost of deeper engagement. What is the difference between "scale" (which is a neutered version of a certain aspiration: why can't we write scale-up or scale-out to make the point clearer?) and "growth"? Is an organisation scaling up the same as an organisation "growing"? What is the basis for saying, "Today, many social service organisations lack a long-term vision and clear mission, which hinders their growth and development"? Also, what is the equivalence between the "grassroots nonprofits" in the title and the "social service organisations" referred to here? I find the last section on "How can grassroots nonprofits scale?" quite problematic. The four points suggested are relevant even under the heading "How can grassroots nonprofits survive?" Is scaling up or scaling out the only way to survive? I raise these points not to devalue the relevance and value of the experiences and testimonies cited in the article. They are real and very relevant to the ongoing discussions about the sector of organisations engaged in grassroots, community-centric development work. Platforms of critical value, such as IDR, should also take a deeper view of the issues and not only pander to a few obsessions out in the air.

The social sector provides the opportunity to work on some of the most complex challenges that humanity faces. The sector is in a high-growth phase in India, driven by the escalating availability of CSR funds and philanthropic capital. The sector’s rapid expansion has underscored the need for young leaders from the private sector, capable of driving innovation and navigating complex challenges. Young leaders from the private sector bring valuable skills and competencies that are highly relevant to the social sector.
