🚀 Zomato Acquires Paytm's Ticketing Biz for ₹2,048 Cr! - Who is the Winner? Zomato’s acquisition of Paytm’s movie and events ticketing business for ₹2,048 crore ($244 million) is a bold move into the "going-out" sector. 🎟️🍽️ By integrating ticketing into its platform, Zomato is poised to create a seamless ecosystem where users can plan their outings—from booking tickets to ordering food—all within a single app. 📱✨ This acquisition also shifts the competitive landscape, as Paytm exits the ticketing scene to refocus on its core financial services. 💼🔄 Here is the Deal Breakdown: - Paytm's organic event business: ₹89 Cr - Paytm's organic movie business: ₹1,195 Cr - Insider (acquired event biz): ₹695 Cr - TicketNew (acquired movie biz): ₹69 Cr How’s the Deal for Zomato? Valued at 1x EV/GOV, 6.9x Revenue, and 71x EBITDA. In comparison, BookMyShow (BMS) was in talks to raise funds earlier this year at a ₹7,500 Cr valuation (8x Revenue, 79x EBITDA). Zomato's deal seems fair, since BMS is the market leader. 📊💰 How’s the Deal for Paytm? Though we can’t take a financial view on Paytm’s organic businesses due to lack of information on organic investments in these businesses, we can definitely assess how its acquisitions fared over these years. Paytm acquired Insider and TicketNew for ₹268 Cr in 2017-18. Now valued at ₹764 Cr, delivering a 17% IRR—a solid return. Paytm made 20x on its ₹35 Cr investment in Insider, but saw a ~70% value drop on TicketNew. Despite this, the 17% IRR on the combined deal is decent. 💼🔄 This is definitely a win-win for both companies. Zomato’s strategic push into entertainment, paired with a well-structured deal, could redefine the market. Meanwhile, Paytm’s exit shows a calculated reshuffle to focus on its core strengths. For most industries, NPS above 70 would be a minimum requirement. Also, planning a big spend on brand marketing to spike growth could affect the NPS for sure. To avoid this, dissect the entire customer journey and identify points where experience can take a beating and affect NPS metric. Then one needs to identify levers which can be utilised to protect the experience. For example, big sales during Diwali Period lead to long wait time to deliver the orders. Most platforms solve this problem by hiring temp packers and delivery staff during sales periods. NPS comes before everything else, and ensuring it grows or at least stays constant during the big growth phase is most important for the long term high consideration for the brand. #brand #NPS
