About us

We, at WWF, believe that humans can live in harmony with nature. In India, we’re studying snow leopards in the Himalayas, tracking tigers in the Terai and Kanha Pench corridor, working with businesses to develop green modules and with communities to find ways to reduce their dependence on forests, among many other projects. There’s a lot more that we do – and we need people with heart to help us do it. Follow us for the latest adventures and openings at WWF-India

The Sustainable Financial Regulations and Central Bank Activities (SUSREG) Tracker, developed by WWF´s Greening Financial Regulation Initiative (GFRI), helps assess how central banks, financial regulators and supervisors integrate climate, broader environmental and social considerations into their practices. The SUSREG Tracker 2024 finds that banking and insurance supervision on climate-related issues have been steadily progressing over the past four years. Key findings include: 📊 Banking supervision shows 18% rise in climate measures (2021-2024); insurance up 17% since 2022; central banking slower at 4% ⚠️ Nature risks (deforestation, water management) remain overlooked; crucial tools like target-setting underutilized 🌎 31 out of 50 countries fall below 50% of SUSREG's environmental criteria; 7/10 biodiversity hotspots show weak nature risk supervision 📈 The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI’s) Climate Study 2024: Delayed climate action poses serious risks to India's long-term economic growth & inflation stability. 💹 RBI Monetary Policy 2024: Climate change impacts expected to lower natural interest rates while requiring stricter inflation controls. India is looking to empower its financial sector to prepare itself to assess and mitigate its climate-related exposure: 📑 New Banking Framework: RBI mandates banks & NBFCs to report climate-related financial risks for better risk assessment. 🌱 The Union Budget 2024-25: The Government of India has stated its plans to develop the nation’s first sustainable finance taxonomy. 🔍 Why it matters India needs climate and nature finance to address the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. The WWF SUSREG Tracker 2024 highlights that enhanced financial flows are essential to support sustainable practices, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect natural habitats. This is crucial for ensuring a resilient future for the country, its population and diverse ecosystems. On 15 October 2024, a workshop to develop an action plan for establishing raptor-safe landscapes in Rajasthan was held at Rajasthan International Centre, Jaipur. The workshop was organised by the Department of Forests, Rajasthan, in collaboration with WWF-India. The workshop was chaired by Shri Arijit Banerjee, PCCF & HoFF of Rajasthan and Shri Pavan Kumar Upadhyay, PCCF (WL) & CWLW, Rajasthan. Other notable dignitaries included Shri Ravi Singh, SG & CEO of WWF-India, Shri Rajpal Singh, Member of State Wildlife Board, and Dr Divyabhanusinh Chavda, Director of Raptor Research and Conservation Foundation, among senior officials of several forest divisions and protected areas of Rajasthan. The main discussion points during the workshop were the systematic monitoring of raptor populations and their nesting habitats to collect data on long-term population trends, developing strong threat mitigation strategies to tackle issues such as poisoning due to NSAIDs and other toxics, plastic contamination of livestock carcasses, and electrocution and collision against power infrastructure. One of the suggested actions included developing a framework for establishing a long-term ecological observatory for monitoring of the species and their habitat parameters. #WWFIndia #workshop #raptor

A key agenda item at the UN Biodiversity Conference, currently taking place in Colombia, is digital sequence information (DSI) on genetic resources – essentially, deciding the modalities for benefit sharing from use of digital sequence information of the world’s genetic resources and how it contributes effectively to the third objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity. At a WWF press conference on the first day of the conference, Vishaish Uppal, Director of Governance, Law, and Policy at WWF-India, emphasized the need for key decisions on how a multilateral benefit-sharing fund will operate. Uppal stressed that the funds must support conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and that the mechanism must follow principles of inclusivity, equity and transparency, while addressing the needs of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, women, and youth. Stay tuned for updates from this important event! 🌿#COP16Colombia #ActforOurPlanet #WWFIndia
