About us

The URMUL Rural Health, Research and Development Trust, Bikaner, was initiated by URMUL Dairy (Uttari Rajasthan Cooperative Milk Union Ltd.), Bikaner, in 1984. URMUL Trust represents a family of organisations working towards social and economic change in the people's lives in the harsh, inhospitable and interior regions of western Rajasthan. What keeps these different organisations and the Trust together are a set of shared feelings, values, commitment to work, and development processes. The care of the development premise of the URMUL TRUST is an intrinsic faith in the capacity of rural people to devise, manage and sustain development programmes.

Meet our proud attendees of the Accenture sponsored Kashida (embroidery) training in Jethwai Village in Jaisalmer district. Whether it be Kamalaji, the Anganwadi worker who enthusiastically rounds up all her mates to come to the training at 1pm sharp or be it Prerna, who always ensures that none of her friends are left behind, one can see the proud smiles and confidence that grows in these potential artisans as they successfully complete one Kashida pattern after another under the guidance of Ms Najji Devi. Enthusiastically raising their embroidery frames to show the entire centre, their newly made creation gives the women a sense of being as they take out time and embroider something solely for themselves. In a region where this is significantly high time poverty among both men and women, this small workshop of two hours per day, gives the women some time out to talk to their peers while also learning a new skill in a safe space relatively free of social constraints and mores. As their skills grow, so do their smiles, confidence, self -esteem and a sense of self. It gives us immense pleasure to see these small unmeasurable achievements that are rarely reflected in official reports but make a huge difference in the lives of the community members!

We are proud to announce the beginnings of our new SBI SAMMAN Project in collaboration with SBI Foundation, that aims to carry out various interventions in Solankitala, Bapunagar and Suryaudainagar villages in the Sherghar Tehsil of Jodhpur District. This project is initiated to honour Seva Medal recipient and 1971 India-Pakistan war hero, late Mr. Bhairon Singh Rathore who is from Suryaudainagar. To acknowledge the immense contributions of Mr. Rathore, the project focuses on holistically developing the surrounding villages that need various different initiatives. The results of our baseline survey in these villages indicated the need for various interventions like providing better livelihood opportunities for the women and youth, who largely depend on MNREGA and rainfed agriculture, better infrastructure in the local village schools that could provide a better education through facilities like Smart TVs and better washrooms, and the need for other infrastructural facilities that help improve the living conditions of the entire village like the installation of solar lights. The project has already begun with the installation of solar lights in the streets of all the three villages. The installation of these solar lights has not only provided a safe passage for the people at night, but also form meeting places for people to come together in case of power cuts or for a casual meet up. The installation of these solar lights has also made it safer for women when they need to step out at night. With the success of the installation of our solar lights, we are also looking forward to taking on other initiatives of the project, like installing an open gym for the youth of the villages who showed a keen interest in joining the armed forces influence by the contributions of late Mr. Rathore, starting SHGs for women and creating alternate livelihood opportunities like providing them training for stitching and building better infrastructure in the schools which will be our first step towards providing a better education.
