It was a pleasure to meet and discuss the future of agriculture with a forward-thinking group of growers from Argentina. From regenerative agriculture to managing risk in a volatile environment, we agreed the future of agriculture is bright and exciting for those willing to embrace the challenge!
On Monday 9th September, our Embassy hosted a roundtable at the Official Residence to discuss the challenges that sustainability and regulations pose to agricultural businesses. The event was organized by Club AgTech, Numen.Bio, and the Argentine Association of Regional Consortia for Agricultural Experimentation (CREA). Movimiento CREA was founded in 1960 with the goal of promoting the integral development of agricultural entrepreneurs to achieve economically profitable and sustainable companies over time, testing technology and transferring it to the environment to contribute to the sector and the country. In this occasion, members from the CREA Carnerillo group had the opportunity to exchange ideas with different UK representatives from the agricultural and retail sector. Among them, Felipe Harrison, Founder and COO AgAnalyst Ltd.; Mike Frank, CEO UPL; Jenny Maresh, from Defra's Legal Standards Policy Department; and Celia Cole, Sainsbury's’s Head of Environment.

Sugarcane is a key crop in India. Nearly 5.5 million hectares of land in India is under sugarcane cultivation. And, more than 50 million farmers depend on the crop for their livelihoods. Despite the large cultivation area, and the crop being grown in 11 states of India, there are no standard cultivation practices in place leading to large variation in the produce quality & quantity throughout the country. Due to weather irregularities, long cultivation seasons, and high dependence of sugarcane on water as a crop, many farmers find it difficult to maximize their outputs. Hence, we rolled out our Sustainable Sugar Program called "Shashwat Mithaas". #reimaginingsustainability #sugarcane #sugar

UPL's Sarus Conservation Program marks a new milestone with its Ninth Annual Sarus Crane count. The Sarus Crane Program is a testament to UPL’s commitment for bio-diversity conservation. It is heartening to see the positive impact of our collaborative efforts, creating a thriving environment for the Sarus Crane and establish an ecosystem where the communities can grow in harmony with nature. Combined efforts of UPL, the Forest Department (Government of Gujarat) and the community have resulted in a significant rise in the Sarus Crane population from 500 in 2015-16 to 1431 in 2023-24, marking a significant increase of 186% since 2015. This initiative in Kheda and Anand districts has helped Gujarat to hold the second-highest wild population of Sarus in India. We conducted the count to get insights into the population dynamics and habitat preferences of Sarus cranes. The effort covered 164 villages across fifteen talukas of both the districts. The count was a collaborative effort involving 99 volunteers from various groups, including 23 from Rural Sarus Protection Groups, 28 UPL Employee volunteers, 7 staff from the Social Forestry Division of Nadiad and Anand, 18 volunteers from the Voluntary Nature Conservancy, 8 students and professors from local colleges, and 12 government school teachers. Three cheers to our volunteers!
