Jijabai Ashok Makasare is one of many waste pickers in Mumbai who toil away to keep the city clean. Despite the important role they play in waste management, Safai Saathis like Jijabai are often subjected to marginalizaion and social exclusion. #Utthaan a project by UNDP in India and Hindustan Unilever, helps workers like Jijabai access social welfare schemes. With support from #Utthaan, the 54-year-old now has a new #bank account and a health card and contributes to the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. “I was unwell for a long time, I missed work and didn’t have much savings, I hope with the health card and #insurance scheme I won’t have ever revisit those tough times,” says Jijabai. Read about how #Utthaan is empowering Jijabai and other Safai Saathis in #Indiahttps://lnkd.in/dhCJKFva

As we welcome this 79th session of the UN General Assembly, we need solutions across the board. "Solutions to bring the Sustainable Development Goals back to life, and end poverty and inequality. Solutions to spur economic progress and job-creation for all — especially women and young people. Solutions to bridge the political divides and end the conflicts that are causing so much death and suffering. Solutions to end the climate catastrophe that is killing our one and only home. Solutions to summon the financing that developing countries need to invest in the future of their people. Solutions that give all countries a voice in global institutions of finance, peace and security. And solutions to ensure that groundbreaking technologies like artificial intelligence are a boon, not a barrier, to human progress and equality. Step by step, solution by solution, we can re-build trust and faith in one another, and in what we can accomplish through collaboration and solidarity." -- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in his address at the Opening of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

On International Day for South-South Cooperation, here's a quick peek at Trinidad and Tobago's new health service robots. The fleet of two disinfecting robots and six humanoid robots were procured under the India-United Nations Development Partnership Fund which is managed by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). The fund, established to support Southern-owned and led sustainable development projects across the developing world, exemplifies India’s dedication to #SouthSouthCooperation and is testament to the power of solidarity among developing countries. On the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, we celebrate the transformative power of unity and solidarity among developing nations. We remember that only together can countries leverage multilateral support and realise shared prosperity. South-South cooperation does not reduce the responsibility of wealthier nations to help tackle global inequalities. It does not replace North-South cooperation. But strong South-South partnerships – along with triangular cooperation – are crucial to building a better future for all. These partnerships can advance a fairer, more inclusive global financial system that responds to the challenges faced by developing countries. They can help unlock the power of digitalization, data, and science-backed solutions for sustainable development. They can help improve the quality of life today and for future generations, building resilience and empowering women and young people. The Summit of the Future in September is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to South-South and triangular cooperation, embracing solidarity and mutual support. By pooling resources, know-how, and experience, we can create a more equitable world for all. - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the International Day of South-South Cooperation Follow this link to learn more about the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), which was established to promote, coordinate and support South-South and triangular cooperation globally and within the United Nations system: https://unsouthsouth.org/

Without proper management, the increasing demand for critical #minerals risks deepening geopolitical tensions and environmental and social challenges. A diverse expert panel, convened by the UN Secretary-General, has issued a set of recommendations to ensure the opportunities of the global #energy transition are pursued with equity, justice and #sustainability. “We established the Panel in response to calls from developing countries, amid signs that the energy transition could reproduce and amplify inequalities of the past – banishing developing countries to the bottom of value chains to watch others grow rich by exploiting their people and putting their environment in jeopardy”: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/e9t_a4EH
