When the E92 M3 was released to the market, most M enthusiasts were thrilled to see the car's beautiful exposed carbon roof. Not only did the piece add to the appearance of the car, but it also saved weight at the most critical point on the chassis- the very top of the car. The carbon roof outer skin is made of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin. After the component has cured, clear-coat is applied to underline the depth effect of the 3-C fabric and protects the matrix material (epoxy resin) from environmental effects. Because of its extreme lightweight, a carbon roof reduces the mass of the vehicle about 5 kilos com pared with a roof made of metal. These savings in weight achieved at the highest point of the vehicle lowers its mass center point and thus gives the car greater stability and greater driving dynamics. Furthermore, it results in remarkable lower fuel consumption due to the lower weight. Can you guess? It's ✨Thermoplastic Pultrusion✨ Pultrusion, a manufacturing method used to create continuous lengths of composite material, was first introduced in the 1950s. Thermoplastic pultrusion not only offers enhanced recyclability but also expands opportunities for the functionalization of pultruded parts. One of the paramount benefits of using reactive in situ thermoplastic pultrusion is the enhanced recyclability of the produced components. Unlike thermoset composites, thermoplastic composites can be melted and reformed, thereby simplifying the recycling process and reducing waste. This characteristic is vital in today's global emphasis on sustainable manufacturing practices. The video shows in-situ process observation of thermoplastic pultrusion using glass-fibre / polypropylene commingled yarns. To reduce the load on the glass window, the polymer is slightly overheated to reduce the viscosity and the throughput is kept just around 100%. After the experiment, the polymer showed clear signs of degradation, highlighting that lower processing temperatures should be used for manufacturing.
