Over the last two years at SkyServe, l’ve been deepIy immersed in the #EarthObservation industry, advocating for a transformative shift towards #ContinuousMonitoring and Near #RealTimelnsights. This articIe by Jarkko Antila on SpaceNews struck a chord with me, especiaIIy the eIegantly articulated concept of “always-on monitoring.” lt perfectly covers where the EO industry must head. The article highlights 8 key technologies poised to reshape the EO market: 1. Higher radio speeds (Ka-band repIacing X-band) 2. Wider ground station networks 3. OpticaI sateIIite-to-ground communications 4. lnter-satellite and satellite-loT Iinks 5. ln-orbit data rooms & cloud AI 6. Onboard processing (Edge Computing) 7. Efficient AI algorithms 8. Quantum computing While all these are crucial, I firmly believe #EdgeComputing (6) combined with #AI algorithms (7) will drive the most immediate and impactful change, further enhancing the effective utilization of other elements. Here's why: 1. #EdgeComputingPlatforms + #GeoAI Models: Together, they filter irrelevant data, enhance valuable information, and produce actionable insights. 2. #SmarterDataFlow: By shrinking data size but improving quality, these insights optimize downstream transfers via ground stations, inter-satellite, IoT, or optical links. This convergence of onboard processing and efficient AI unlocks the true potential of EO, paving the way for "data that is lean yet meaningful." Yet, despite its promise, many EO satellite operators seem hesitant to break free from the status quo and fully embrace this shift. Why?
