Pioneer in Rights-Based Systemic Interventions for Gender Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in South Asia. | Regd. 1992
About us
Founded in 1992 as a pioneering organisation working for Gender Equality & Responsible Sexuality in India, Sakshi is the force behind the first test-case litigation against Child Sexual Abuse in India and the force behind two landmark PILs – ‘Vishaka & Others Vs. State of Rajasthan’ & ‘Sakshi Vs. Union of India’ which informed several gender-based laws, including POSH (Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace, Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Act 2013) and POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Amendment Act 2019). Following the formation of the laws, in order to address the bias in interpretation by the Judiciary, Sakshi spearheaded the Asia Pacific Advisory Forum for Judicial Education on Gender Equality for the Judiciary of 5 countries of the Region; India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. The 10 Year programme was eventually institutionalised and came to be recognised as a ‘Best Practice’ Model by UNIFEM (UN Women) In the last decade, through its flagship programmes, The Rakshin Project & SBOX Sakshi has been working to build access to justice by informing and educating the citizens about the law reforms, and their rights. With a clear focus on attitudinal shifts for strengthening a culture of accountability, Sakshi has led several Campaigns, Social Arts and Communication for Development (C4D) initiatives to mainstream difficult conversations and build empathetic communities.

In 1992, Sakshi entered the world of gender justice. Our involvement in two significant Public Interest Litigations—Vishakha vs. State of Rajasthan and Sakshi vs. Union of India was about shifting how our society thinks about prevention and redressal of gender-based violence. These PILs laid the foundation for the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Our commitment to gender equality extended beyond India through the Asia Pacific Advisory Forum, addressing bias in the judiciary's interpretation of gender-based laws. Sakshi spearheaded Gender Equality education for the Judiciary of five countries in the Region under the Asia Pacific Advisory Forum for Judicial Education. Our belief in the power of collaboration led us to partner with UN Women, IDH, CNH, and Mahindra Finance. We are part of programs like the Women’s Safety Accelerator Fund (WSAF), the LEAD project, the Dhan Samvaad project, and the Textile Industry Coalition (TiC). Our MoUs with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for the Rakshin Project by Sakshi and the Ministry of Rural Development for the KalGyani Project by Sakshi have given us a national platform. With access to 40,000 colleges and 10 crore households, we’re focusing on preventing sexual violence and building capacity around gender-based laws to promote access to justice. Since 2018, The Rakshin Project by Sakshi has reached 1,000+ colleges and 67,500+ students across India. As gender-based violence moves into digital spaces, so do we. Sakshi is now part of ACTS (Alliance for Cyber Trust and Safety), an initiative dedicated to making digital spaces safer. Three decades in, and the learning never stops. Our work has always been driven by research and community needs. We’ve transitioned from legal interventions to fostering behaviour and attitude change that will end gender-based violence among various stakeholders, including students, textile industry workers, Anganwadi workers, tea-garden workers, SHG members, Judges, and many others. We’re far from finished. With new challenges in both physical and digital spaces, shifting social norms, and the ongoing struggle against gender-based violence, our mission remains clear. We continue to focus on fostering everday equality and ending GBV for all. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. Here’s to 32 years of work that’s not yet done and to the road ahead. Together, we move upwards and onwards—towards a gender-just world for all. #Sakshi32Years #OnwardsAndUpwards #EverydayEquality Smita Bharti Sanjiv Sharma Deepak Gujrati Dr. Aditi Kishore Ramya Nisal Naomi Joy Yadav Nayanika Datta Michelle Liliyan Harry
