We at Equilibrio Advisory LLP truly believe in the importance of #MentalHealthatWork, and strive to make mental health and wellbeing at work a priority. We are committed to fostering an environment where every individual feels safe, valued, and empowered to thrive. To commemorate #WorldMentalHealthDay2024, which spotlights the global theme, "Prioritizing Mental Health at Work," we took the opportunity to create space for our team to reflect on what works, especially in the context of remote working. We asked our team what practices, policies and other workplace aspects make them feel supported within the organization, and this is what they had to say! We're immensely proud of the feedback we received this week and this supports us to know what needs to be strengthened, added or renewed when it comes to practice and systems that support workplace mental health and wellbeing. Today, we renew our commitment to building safe and equitable workplaces, starting from within! Rosanna Rodrigues Prerana Saraf Farzeen K. Tusharika Vig Adv. Vasantha Kotagiri Monika S. A profound sense of tiredness and exhaustion seems to be prevalent in modern life. .This feeling of “tiredness” can bring with it anger, frustration, disappointment and anxiety and lead to unsustainable patterns, productivity and goals. #Hustleculture glorifies the patterns and ways in which this tiredness comes in.  It also tends to stigmatize a simple antidote – rest. Nowadays, a thing as important as rest has been equated with laziness, wasting time and even being “unproductive”. However, rest is an important facet of being productive, being creative and being in balance with oneself and the world around us.  Just like a field must remain fallow to replenish itself, a car or a machine requires servicing to be functioning at optimum, or a laptop may need to be switched off, restarted for updates, rest is essential to us.    It’s really simple -  When we talk about the solution for tiredness, it’s rest. Radical rest at the workplace refers to a transformative approach to taking breaks and prioritizing rest as an essential part of maintaining mental and physical health, especially in high-pressure environments. It’s reclaiming one’s right to take breaks as essential, from a larger culture that vilifies it that makes rest radical.    It’s prioritizing self care and self love. it’s a rebellion against the norm which equates how busy a person is with their worth. These risks should be addressed with the meaningful involvement of workers and their representatives, and persons with lived experience of mental health conditions. These days, the topic of #toxicworkculture has been in the spotlight. We’re not only seeing many major news spaces and organizations talk about it, but so many people have come forth and shared their stories and experiences online as well. This outpouring of personal stories seems to be symptomatic of a larger work culture that is failing to acknowledge and promote a sustainable work culture. As we all are aware of the ramifications of work related stress and exhaustion which usually comes in from unstructured and ad hoc workplace deliverables, unsupportive systems and language and a lack of rest or down time, it’s time we take a step back and see how the larger systemic issue which is at play needs to be urgently addressed. So many instances of toxic workplace culture have emerged in the recent past. Over the last couple of years, there have been frequently instances of unsupportive workplace practice that have emerged online - for example several incidents of unsupportive language and management practices had been leaked and shared, where managers have been seen yelling at their teams; when conversations around the 72 hour work week took center stage - paraded as an aspirational work ethic for young people; when an organization literally locked its doors and refused to let employees leave before task completion; and even when influential leaders in the workspace propagated ideas of an 18 - 20 hour work day being ideal. Given this grim state of affairs, it becomes important to pause and reflect on: 1. What gives rise to this toxic culture that many organizations still adopt and what can be its fallouts?  2. Why are organizations failing to create a greater sense of psychological safety for their employees? 3. How can we make mental health and wellbeing a priority at workplace? Remember, you are not alone. It's okay to feel what you are feeling. Reach out if you need support – your mental health matters, always. #toxicworkculture #mentalhealthatwork #mentalhealthawareness #prioritizementalhealthatwork #toxicworkplace #employeewellbeing
