"I think that as a venture capital firm, we're a service provider. I get a little bothered with the representation of what venture investing is in the popular media… It's this much equity for this much money, and that's all it is. If just money solved the problem, every big company would solve everything they needed to and we would have no startups," Lightbox founder and managing director Sandeep Murthy recently told Vishal Krishna on The UpStreamLife podcast. Congrats Jaydeep Barman and the team Rebel Foods you clearly have created a unique solution for unique India.
Over the years, many people have asked me why there isn’t a Rebel Foods equivalent in the US. But then, UPI does not have a comp, Q commerce did not work anywhere else, mobile penetration is unparalleled, and ed-tech is a booming business only in India (notwithstanding the mishaps). My fundamental theory about all this is that India as a country does not have a comp. Anything that requires infra build-up—landline telephony, banks, schools—ultimately gets leapfrogged digitally here. The same applies to restaurants. India has the highest rent-to-sales ratio for restaurants in the world (2X of the US), making it the most expensive high-street restaurant infra market. No wonder the 3-year mortality rate of restaurants in India is 90%+, and our country remains 35 times less penetrated than China in terms of # of restaurants/capita. As it dawned on us many years ago, we engineered a new way of building restaurants—an operating system for creating “Multiple Delivery Brands Addressing Different Customer Missions” from one Infrastructure (some people call us a cloud kitchen company—that will be like calling Amazon a warehouse company). We discovered a model that is relevant for the customer - through its multitude of brands - across the day, day of the week, and season of the year, a model that can bring a new restaurant to a neighborhood without adding a piece of real estate, a model that can be an infinite canvas for launching/scaling new brands as trends change over time. Then, someone asked why we couldn't bring a world-famous brand to India through this model. 2.5 years ago, after a successful pilot, Wendy’s, the World’s second-largest burger brand, awarded us the 20-year exclusive franchise for India—the first target being 150 locations in 3 years—10% high street + 90% delivery-only restaurants from the Rebel cloud kitchens. Last week, we won Wendy’s Global’s Monument Award for being the outstanding franchisee worldwide - for growth and development. We are now 175+ locations in India - 6 months ahead of target. Quietly, we scaled Wendy’s across the country through our kitchen network. We did it at 10% of the high street capex of a typical QSR, with 0 incremental rentals and 3X faster payback, and by launching and scaling a delicious India-centric menu super fast (Including the crispiest french fries on delivery). And we are just warming up. In the next 12 months, Wendy’s will scale to 150 more locations, and in another 2.5 years, 500+ neighborhoods in India will have a Wendy’s - the burger known for its tremendous quality for the last 55 years. They say in Zen, " Doing a job well is good enough; the pride is extra.” But, for once, I can’t help being super proud of the team that had the gumption to reimagine a 500-year-old industry—to the extent that world-famous brands are now ready to give this a go in India. And we are just getting started. Kallol Ankush Sagar Piyush Soumyadeep Raghav Ankur Mohit Nishant Anburaj vijay Amit Ravi

Upstreamlife Media Pvt Ltd helps tech businesses to curate content that reiterate values to their stakeholders and enables them to continuously tell stories in channels of distribution owned by them.
India is complex. Yet in that complexity what has emerged is an entire generation that is exposed to information thanks to smartphones & digital payments. What have we done with it? We have increased our consumption & it has become the fabric of our economy. This has led to improvements in supply chains and the proliferation of brands operating at scale by using data and technology. Taking such companies to the next level is Lightbox with its unique investment and operating model. theUpStreamLife Media Pvt Ltd caught up with Sandeep Murthy the partner at Lightbox, who talks about where the fund is heading. More than that Sandeep talks about how the India story got to where it is and where it is heading. "Being an entrepreneur is like chewing glass," he says in this podcast and I could not agree with him more. Let me know what you think of the episode. Do you chew on glass and survive? I do it everyday because I believe in the India story. Enjoy it. We recently had the honour of meeting some of India’s finest athletes at an event organised by OGQ in Mumbai to felicitate medal winners from the 2024 Paris Olympics. Out of the 117 athletes who participated in the games this year, 49 were supported by OGQ and, of the 5 individual medal winners, 4 were OGQ-supported. OGQ’s mission to prepare homegrown athletes for the Olympics has inspired us here at Lightbox over the years. We wish them more and more success going forward. #Olympics #ParisOlympics #sports #athletes #winners OGQ Lightbox

🚨🚨New Report: Solving for India’s Elders The elderly make up around 11% of India’s population. And, by 2050, more than 20% of the population will be over the age of 60. As a demographic, this is a potential market that startups and investors cannot ignore as they address the country’s consumption markets. In our latest report — Solving for India’s Elders — we dive into the complexities and the potential of the eldercare market, and explore white spaces for services (and products, to a lesser extent). Watch the video for our analysis of the eldercare opportunity. If you would like to read the report, a PDF version is available.
