About us

HelpAge India is secular, not-for-profit organization registered under the Societies' Registration Act of 1860. We were set up in 1978, and since then have been raising resources to protect the rights of India's elderly and provide relief to them through various interventions. We voice the needs of India's 100 million+ "grey" population, and directly impact the lives of many elders through our services each year. We advocate with national & local government to bring about policy that is beneficial to the elderly. We make society aware of the concerns of the aged and promote better understanding of ageing issues. We help the elderly become aware of their own rights so that they get their due and are able to play an active role in society.

A significant and welcome move by the Government - The health coverage of 70 plus senior citizens, irrespective of their socio-economic status, under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Specifically in terms of taking care of hospitalisation costs and lessening the burden of treatment in case of large expenditures. "With only about 20% of elders covered by health insurance and most facing chronic conditions, the Ayushman Voya Vandana Card offers vital support for elderly care, especially for those managing chronic illnesses. This initiative stands to ease healthcare burdens for families while uplifting the quality of life for our elderly citizens. We eagerly anticipate its implementation,” says Prateep Chakraborty, Chief Operating Officer (COO), HelpAge India. On the Foundation Day of the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC), a one-day national conference on Rights of Older Persons was organised in New Delhi. Anupama Datta, Head - Policy Research & Advocacy, HelpAge India, was invited to share insights on the pressing issues faced by India’s elders: such as, digital exclusion, healthcare access, and growing family dependence. She highlighted the importance of co-created, inclusive solutions to ensure greater support and accessibility for elders.

NHRC organised a one-day national conference on Rights of Older Persons in New Delhi on 18thOctober. I was invited to share my views on the important topic of ageing of aged population in India. The other panelists raised issues of feminization of ageing population, incresaing co morbidities and disability with advanced age isolation and loneliness. The solutions included programs designed by the police to ensure safety and security of older persons especially those living alone, health care interventions and need for policy on adult vaccinations. I shared the practical problems oldest old face primarily that of lack of adequate resources due to increasing longevity, more so with women and those not well endowed. Lack of health insurance and access to quality care, excessive dependence on family. At times family of oldest old are themselves older persons, so straining them physically and financially. Digital divide and exclusion of older persons; both poor and not so poor, is also an urgent concern. They lack access to devices and are hesitant to use them, women and disabled more so. The solutions are in the domain of architectural change in the system to ensure access to those who are on the margins like oldest old. Co creation is the other approach ,that, if not adopted will result in less than optimal results.

It was an honour for HelpAge India to be a part of the 8th session of the United Nations ESCAP Committee on Social Development. Our CEO, Rohit Prasad, was a panelist for the discussion on “Assessing demographic trends and intergenerational relations in Asia and the Pacific”. Mr. Prasad made the case for ‘intentional’ intergenerational approaches i.e. much greater attention on embedding and integrating in policies, systems and communities – be it in livelihoods, healthcare, caregiving, learning, social connections and others, representing the extensive work of HelpAge India directly with communities on the ground and in shaping systems and policies. #Intergenerational #InclusiveDevelopment #Longevity #Healthcare #LifelongLearning #DigitalDivide

It was an honour to join as a panelist for the discussion on “Assessing demographic trends and intergenerational relations in Asia and the Pacific” at the eighth session of the Committee on Social Development of United Nations ESCAP. The session #CSocDev8 had a broad agenda to review opportunities to accelerate progress on social development, including strengthening social protection systems, intergenerational relations, and disability-inclusive development and disability rights. The panel I joined discussed intergenerational relations & linkages to social-economic-technology dimensions, looking at good practices, innovative approaches and policy recommendations. Ably moderated by Ms. Sabine Henning (Chief, Sustainable Demographic Transition Section, ESCAP), my fellow speakers were distinguished experts from the region: - Suphannada Lowhachai (NESDC, Thailand) gave insights into the economic contributions of different generations and role National Transfer Accounts (NTA) can play - Professor Lou Vivian (University of Hong Kong) covered the trend of changing household sizes and compositions which are reshaping intergenerational living arrangements & innovative caregiving practices - Paul Ong (Tsao Foundation, Singapore) outlined key factors that make intergenerational practices successful, particularly in community settings At the outset, in context of multi-generational population living together & longer (longevity gains) in many countries including India, I made the case for ‘intentional’ intergenerational approaches i.e. much greater attention on embedding and integrating in policies, systems and communities – be it in livelihoods, healthcare, caregiving, learning, social connections and others. Representing the extensive work of HelpAge India directly with communities on the ground and in shaping systems and policies, I spoke on the intergenerational approaches in #health (keeping life course approach and particularly in supporting mental health & well-being, reducing loneliness), #lifelonglearning (critical for the goal of active & productive ageing but an area that currently remains underserved and underinvested), and bridging #technology or '#digital divide' (urgent attention required by all stakeholders – government, private and social sector – for rapidly enabling digital literacy & safety and improving adoption rate amongst seniors) There is tremendous opportunity for bringing transformational change through collaborations between Civil Society Organisations/ Social Sector Organisations (CSOs/SSOs), government and the private sector. Many thanks to the wonderful team of Social Development Division at ESCAP whom I interacted with – Srinivas Tata (Director), Sabine Henning and Napaphat Satchanawakul #intergenerational #health #lifelonglearning #technology #digital #demographic #ageing #longevity #social #caregiving #livelihoods #community
