To cheer you up on this Tuesday evening, here is a puppet show 'The Lion and the Mouse' designed and performed by our Nali-Kali (grades 1-3) teachers Geetha (narrator) and Sujatha (lion). Ganga from grade 3 has given her voice to the role of the Mouse. A puppet show brings alive the story and is able to transcend the language barrier. All children grasp and enjoy the story to the fullest. Teachers report that even when children move on to higher grades, they are always able to recall this particular story because of this cinematic experience!✨ Joseph Deyone Jacobi Nomita Sikand Preethy Rao Rizwan Ahmed Somya Nand #Gubbachi #LearningToFly #NaliKali #PuppetShow #ElementaryEducation #MigrantChildren

About us
"Gubbachi" means sparrows in Kannada - "Gubbis" with love We emote with the fast disappearing and unacknowledged sparrows from the urban landscape - much like our migrant children living in make-shift blue tarpaulin house. Our endeavour is to recognise their struggles and take meaningful education to underserved children Our intervention design stems from twin beliefs • public education is the only sustainable option for underserved families, and • integration into formal public schooling, with quality learning, will move the needle for this child All our work recognises the need to empower migrant families in an alien urban space.

For the past two weeks, clay model making workshops have been held at our Community Learning Centre in Kariyammana Agrahara. These workshops were facilitated by Kavya Ganesan from Claystation Art Studios Pvt ltd. The themes for the sessions were 'Forest' and 'Neighbourhood'. Initially, the instructor discussed the themes briefly and then let the children explore those themes with clay, some wooden tools and small amounts of water. Instruction was limited and the children's imagination began to run wild! The Gubbachi forest now had robots and dinosaurs alongside the other animals! The aspect of clay the children enjoyed most was that the work could be smushed and destroyed! And recreated all over again! At the end of the hour, we were left with mud stained hands and wide smiles! - Saahitya Kota, Teacher Joseph Deyone Jacobi Nomita Sikand Preethy Rao Rizwan Ahmed Somya Nand #Gubbachi #LearningToFly #ClayStation #CommunityLearningCentre #Art

Our Community Associates have been conducting After-School activities in 7 communities with engaging over 200 children. The activities range from art, games, academics and awareness meetings on relevant topics like maintaining hygiene. This engagement is done at least two times a week in these communities. Children remain meaningfully engaged in the evenings and get a platform to express themselves. When children from our preschool program Gubbachi Buds visited the neighbourhood farm, they got to see a variety of plants that grow vegetables and trees bearing fruits. The children enjoyed identifying the vegetables, naming the colours and tasting some fresh radish! 💚 Joseph Deyone Jacobi Nomita Sikand Preethy Rao Rizwan Ahmed Somya Nand #Gubbachi #LearningToFly #Preschool #Farmvisit

Bheerappa, Mala and Sardar - Community Associates from the Gubbachi Enable team underwent six-months paralegal training at OutLawed India and graduated as 'Nyaaya Mitra'. Nyaaya Mitras are trained to provide crucial first-point-of-contact legal aid. As part of their training, they have undertaken assignments where they visited workplaces of migrant workers to see if they were complying with the labour laws. Congratulations to Bheerappa, Mala and Sardar! We are extremely proud to see them undergo this challenging training program while also keeping up with their daily work. 🎓 ✌ Joseph Deyone Jacobi Nomita Sikand Preethy Rao Rizwan Ahmed Somya Nand #Gubbachi #LearningToFly #OutLawedIndia #Paralegal #Community

Our students at the Bridge program in Kariyammana Agrahara are mainly migrants from Assam and West Bengal - they are fluent in spoken Hindi. Literacy studies show that the language skills a child has in a familiar language are transferable to learning a second language. In a Hindi class here, students are trying to read simple text. The traction learners get out of reading a language they have a vocabulary in is amazing to watch!
