About us
We are a social technology company incubated out of IIT Delhi. We started in 2009 with the intent of reversing the flow of information, that is, to make it bottom-up instead of top-down. Using simple technologies and social context to design tools, we have been able to impact communities at large. In 2015, we got together with the Life Impacting Services team of OnMobile to form OnionDev. Our pioneering radio automation system now runs at 40+ community radio stations in India and 5 in Africa, enabling an aggregate population of 2.5 million people to create their own local media. In 2011, we built a radio-over-phone citizen journalism service that in now deployed in Jharkhand, Bihar, and MP in India, and in Afghanistan and Pakistan internationally, and has clocked more than 1.5 users and 6 million phone calls. We are now bringing together our footprint on radio-over-phone and community radio services across the country, to build a unified platform of social media for the bottom of the pyramid. We call this Mobile Vaani. Mobile Vaani is our answer to building a social media platform equivalent to Facebook/YouTube/Twitter for rural areas. Communities use Mobile Vaani to share updates about local village events, folk songs and cultural updates, feedback on government schemes, and discussions about topics of local importance. We are actively looking for non-profit and corporate partners interested to use the Mobile Vaani network for outreach into remote and rural areas in a measurable and robust manner.

Gram Vaani’s #MobileVaani platform is making a significant #impact on the lives of #farmers in Sahjahanpur and beyond. By providing a space where they can voice their concerns, share knowledge, and receive expert advice, we are bridging the gap between rural communities and the information they need to thrive. Farmers can access real-time guidance on crops, fertilizers, soil health, and more, directly from their phones. All this can be accessed with or without an internet enabled phone! Our initiative not only addresses individual queries but also fosters a #collectivelearning environment. When one farmer implements a piece of advice and shares their success, others follow, creating a ripple effect of #positivechange and at the same time conveys that #technology can support the day to day lives and improve livelihood opportunities when made user friendly. We are thrilled to share the results of Kaun Banegi Business Leader (KBBL). This was a competition for women designed to foster entrepreneurship and generate new ideas for non-traditional businesses in partnership with Development Alternatives. We received business ideas from around 130+ women from Babina and Badagaon blocks in Jhansi districts. Based on the ideas, 50 potential female entrepreneurs were selected for a "Start and Improve Your Business" training by the International Labour Organization (ILO). Last week, 19 finalists presented their business ideas, and four winners were selected. To help these women establish or strengthen their businesses, the Indian Micro Enterprises Development Foundation (IMEDF) will provide them with support services. We wish the winners all the best in their entrepreneurial journey. At Gram Vaani's flagship program, Mobile Vaani, we empower rural women with opportunities for #socialentrepreneurship. We foster #innovation and cultivate non-traditional enterprises.
