IIT Kharagpur graduate Bipin Dhane started The Hummingbird School in 2017 to bring education to the tribal children on the sinking Majuli Island. The purpose of the school is to break the cycle of poverty on the island by providing educational opportunities to its children. Mamoon Akhtar went from office to office in Kolkata to collect used papers and trash so he could sell them and buy books and copies for his students. He spent everything he earned to help the kids who came to him. As years went by, he built a school in the Tikiapara slum, brick by brick. This area had been known for acute poverty and high levels of crime with children taking to illegal activities early in life. When Bhimabai Jondhale, known as Aaji, saw her tea stall customers engrossed in their phones, she decided to inspire a reading habit. In 2015, she transformed her tea stall into Ajjichya Pustakancha Hotel (Grandmother’s Hotel and Books) on National Highway 3. With over 5,000 books in Marathi, Hindi, and English, her eatery offers both a meal and a literary escape. Despite early challenges, including an unsupportive husband and financial struggles, Aaji’s love for books and community service shines through.
