About us

Established in 1927, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is the oldest, largest and the apex business chamber in India. Our history is closely interwoven with India's independence struggle and now with her emergence as one of the most rapidly growing economies globally. FICCI has contributed to this historical process by encouraging debate, articulating the private sector’s views and influencing policy. A non-government, not-for-profit organisation, FICCI is the voice of India’s business and industry. FICCI draws its membership from the corporate sector, both private and public, including SMEs and MNCs; FICCI enjoys an indirect membership of over 2,50,000 companies from various regional chambers of commerce. FICCI provides a platform for sector specific consensus building, networking and as the first port of call for Indian industry and the international business community.

The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), will conduct two landmark events—#HIMTECH2024 and HIM-DRONE-A-THON-2 in Leh, Ladakh. The curtain raiser for these events was held today at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, where senior officers from the Indian Army and representatives from FICCI jointly unveiled the initiative. The event is in sync with the Indian Army’s vision for 2024 as the ‘Year of Technology Absorption.’ During the curtain raiser, teasers for the HIM- DRONE-A-THON-2 and HIMTECH 2024 were released, offering a glimpse of what promises to be a significant milestone in India's defence technology landscape.   HIM- DRONE-A-THON-2 is set to take place from September 17-18, 2024, at Wari La, Ladakh. This event will focus on showcasing and enhancing drone technologies tailored for high-altitude military operations. HIMTECH 2024 will be held on September 21-22, 2024, at Rinchen Auditorium Grounds in Leh, Ladakh. The event will spotlight advancements in Indigenous defence technologies, particularly for high-altitude applications.   During the curtain raiser, Maj Gen C.S. Mann, AVSM, VSM, ADB, Indian Army, underlined the significance of the event in enhancing the efficiency of the Indian Army through the adoption of cutting-edge indigenous products. Maj Gen Mann emphasized that the induction of drones has been a significant focus for the Indian Army as part of its broader modernization program to prepare for future operations, operational readiness, agility, and adaptability, especially in high-altitude operations in Ladakh. He expressed optimism that the industry would have an excellent opportunity to evaluate its products and capabilities.   Maj Gen P.S. Bhatti, MGGS (SD&CD), Northern Command, introduced the theme of HIMTECH 2024 as ‘Harnessing Military Technology for High Altitude Areas.’ Gen Bhatti highlighted the goal of promoting Leh, Ladakh, as a new business destination for modern technology developers, industries, and academic institutions during the exposition and drone-a-thon. He emphasised that the events would foster cooperation between the defence industry, users, and academia and reshape the process of product development for the stakeholders.   Mr Ashish Kansal, Co-Chair of FICCI Defence & Homeland Security and Executive Director of SMPP Ltd, stressed the importance of HIMTECH 2024 as a critical juncture for the Indian industry to innovate and collaborate with the armed forces. He emphasised that FICCI, along with its industry members, is deeply committed to contributing to the vision of Raksha Atmanirbharta on a much larger scale. Mr Kansal also highlighted the potential for these demonstrations to boost export opportunities for Indian products.

Insightful session at FICCI on ‘Blueprint for Sustainability: Designing for a Resilient World’ with Dr Benjamin Sovacool of Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability. The need for climate change mitigation measures is indisputable but it is important to aim for equitable solutions which take into consideration the development needs of the Global South. India’s commitment to reduce the carbon intensity of its economy is noteworthy, and it has rolled out significant policy interventions to support energy transition. Addressing the second edition of FICCI’s Tunnelling India conference, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari underlined technology upgradation and cost-effective solutions to tackle the unique challenges of India's diverse terrain while maintaining high-quality standards.   Shri Gadkari announced that the government has already completed 35 tunnels spanning 49 kilometres at the cost of Rs 15,000 crore rupees. Currently, 69 tunnels covering 134 kilometres are under construction, with an estimated investment of Rs 40,000 crore rupees. Looking ahead, plans are in place for an additional 74 tunnels stretching 273 kilometres, projected to cost Rs 100,000 crore rupees.   "We need to find out exactly which is the best technology that is cost-effective without compromising on quality," Shri Gadkari stated, emphasising the importance of adopting global best practices in infrastructure development.   The minister highlighted the need for terrain-specific approaches, particularly in the challenging Himalayan regions. He called for innovative solutions, such as precast technology and push-back techniques, to address recurring issues like landslides.   Minister Gadkari also emphasised the critical role of performance audits in ensuring project efficiency. "Performance audit is more important than financial audit," he stated, underlining the need for a holistic evaluation of projects from the initial Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage to implementation. This approach, he argued, would help achieve perfection in execution, optimal use of technology, and quality assurance while minimising capital investment.   The minister also discussed innovative cost-saving measures, including potentially reusing materials excavated during tunnel construction.   Ms Bhavani Koneru, Member, FICCI Committee on Transport Infrastructure, Executive Vice President & Head - Urban Transit SBG, Larsen & Toubro, emphasised the need for India to develop indigenous tunnelling technologies tailored to its unique geological conditions and cost requirements. Besides, she highlighted the importance of resource management, proposing innovative solutions for repurposing excavated materials from tunnelling projects. Ms Koneru also stressed on localising the supply chain, suggesting that India should develop domestic capabilities for producing components like rubber gaskets, which are currently imported.    Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, Director General, Border Roads Organisation, Ministry of Defence, Government of India also spoke on occasion. He underlined that opportunities for tunnels in India are "limitless", emphasising the need for knowledge sharing and site visits.   On occasion, FICCI-CRISIL Limited Knowledge Report on ‘Advancing Tunneling in India: Challenges, priorities and potential solutions’, was released by the Union Minister.  ____________

India's vision for a #ViksitBharat by 2047 calls for all stakeholders to work in cohesion, doubling down on efforts to unlock the nation's true potential. While the government must continue addressing bottlenecks and creating pathways for growth and prosperity, delivering these outcomes remains a key responsibility of the industry. With this objective, FICCI has outlined four key priorities for the year that align with the goals of Viksit Bharat, writes FICCI President Dr Anish Shah for Business Today.

It was an honour to attend the FICCI India Manufacturing Leadership Forum and connect with other leaders from the industry. India's manufacturing sector has always been a cornerstone of the nation's economy. It holds immense potential to fulfil the aspirations of a young population, meet increasing consumer demand, attract shifts in FDI flows, and ultimately secure India's position as a global manufacturing leader. As the Hon'ble Minister of Commerce, Shri Piyush Goyal Ji mentioned in his address, the manufacturing sector has been growing in tandem with the Indian economy, steadily contributing around 16-17% to the GDP. However, increasing this sector's contribution to GDP is critical. The key to this progress is the government's continued effort to improve the ease of doing business. Simplifying processes, reducing logistics costs, and providing better access to capital are essential steps. Expanding initiatives like the National Single Window System and the Unified Logistics Interface Platform can cut approval times by 50% and reduce logistics costs by 10-12%. These measures will bring significant value to manufacturers. Additional steps towards increasing the sector's competitiveness include scaling renewable energy, advancing research and development and facilitating strategic joint ventures in critical areas like semiconductors and solar manufacturing. At Jindal Stainless, we are dedicated to doing our part in building a sustainable future for manufacturing and also boosting our global competitiveness. We are taking concrete steps towards decarbonisation, from pioneering green hydrogen plants to using 72% recyclable materials in our production. Our efforts align with India's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. We urge all stakeholders to join this mission.
