But at just four years old, her world turned dark when she was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare and deadly eye cancer. With treatment costs beyond her family's reach, hope seemed lost. That’s when the Koshika Foundation stepped in to provide life-saving care. Thanks to this timely intervention, Monika received the treatment she needed—just in time. Today, at eight years old, Monika is thriving. She has a prosthetic (artificial) left eye and clear vision in her right. She’s excelling in school and enjoying life with her friends, with a future full of promise. In India, 50 percent of children with this deadly eye cancer lose their sight and life. But as Monika’s story shows, early detection and swift, collaborative action can save both sight and life. With the rise of myopia (short-sightedness), our school eye screening camps are more crucial than ever. These camps focus on early detection of refractive errors, ensuring students receive the necessary corrective care. DSAEK Surgical Skill Transfer Course On July 27th and 28th, 2024, we hosted an intensive hands-on DSAEK surgical course focused on enhancing skills in Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK). This workshop was led by esteemed faculty members— 𝐃𝐫. Umang M., Nidhi Gupta, 𝐃𝐫. manvi aggarwal, and 𝐌𝐫. surender dixit—the workshop provided an invaluable opportunity for surgeons to deepen their expertise in managing complex endothelial disorders. Participants engaged in: - Live surgical demonstrations including three DSAEK surgeries. - Wet lab sessions featuring manual graft preparation and insertion in cadaveric and goat eyes. - Automated tissue dissection demonstrations at the eye bank. The event saw participation from 11 external candidates and 3 senior cornea fellows from across India, including Haryana, Agra, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Attendees gained critical insights into patient selection, meticulous surgical techniques, and post-operative care.
