Happy Birthday ComMutiny - The Youth Collective "Why collectives?" While it’s a question we are asked often, It's a question we rarely need to answer. The wicked challenges we face demand collaborative leadership. Collectives offer a powerful solution: shared, inter-generational, and cross-sectoral strategies for accelerating norm shifts. They're also spaces for friendship, learning, solidarity, and wellbeing. What happened over the last weekend is just a representation of what is possible when organisations evolve into collectives. Over three days, the vision and voice of more than 70 organisations from the vartaLeap coalition amplified the need for judgement free spaces for youth led social change. At the event, ‘Beyond Right and Wrong – Youth leadership is Changing the Game’, CSO leaders, academics, media professionals, government representatives, donors and young leaders themselves, committed to being youth allies, taking their intention to action by supporting young people to succeed in their changemaking endeavours. The two days that followed at the vartaLeap treat, where authentic spaces of seeing, being and doing together were co-created. Where questions, curiosities and divergences were celebrated as much as alignment, togetherness and friendships. I am humbled by the diversity and brilliance of what our sector has to offer and I was humbled by the intellectual and emotional wisdom and generosity of the collective. As ComMutiny – The Youth Collective celebrates its foundation day today, I'm reminded of the paradigm shift it's brought to my understanding of leadership and I am deeply grateful for that to every member that makes this ecosystem come alive and thrive.

"The paradox of a nation with the world’s largest youth population, where the demographic dividend remains largely untapped. Structural barriers—ranging from inadequate support systems to the lack of nurturing spaces & role models for young leaders—impede their ability to thrive as social entrepreneurs. In India, these challenges are further compounded by hierarchical and patriarchal mindsets that undermine youth agency..." • 𝗪𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱, 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮! 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴... In the social sector, we often find ourselves working in silos—focusing passionately on health, gender, education, and other areas. While intersectionality is often discussed, our deep focus on specific areas can sometimes limit the exploration of new possibilities. At vartaLeap, we decided to challenge this notion. We launched a championship on climate action, inviting young intrapreneurs from organisations who are interested in the subject of climate action but are not sure where to start to pitch their ideas. 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿: • In just 10 days, 120+ pitches poured in from young visionaries across the country, showcased at 29 matches. • The quality of the pitches inspired us to add a wild card round, enabling more teams to bring their initiatives to life. • Quarterfinals and semifinals across 9 states narrowed it down to 12 grant-winning pitches for project implementation. • The top 6 will be presented at the grand finale on 20th Dec, at Beyond Right and Wrong: A vartaLeap event in Delhi • Even non-finalists continue to inspire, gaining support from coaches and champions! 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘁: • Climate action resonates across sectors, even in organisations without an explicit focus on it. • Young leaders, when trusted, deliver bold, transformative ideas that can pivot organisations in new directions. • Gamification creates opportunities—not by judging ideas but by unlocking creative potential for meaningful impact. This is how we change the game: A platform, a bold idea, a leader with vision, and allies ready to make it happen! Here’s to our 6 runners-up, whose inspiring ideas are already on the path of intention to action! #YouthLeadership #ClimateAction #Innovation #GameChangers

  • Social change grounded in community based action sustains and how! The Peer Leader Programme in Jharkhand is building a network of 90 Peer Leaders and 70 Changemakers working in the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) communities to engage 9,000 adolescents on critical issues like ending child marriage, addressing gender-based violence, promoting sexual and reproductive health rights & emotional well-being. As these leaders step forward, they are not only addressing pressing issues but also reshaping their communities for a more equitable future. Thanks for featuring their story Feminism In India 💚

  • 50 Youth Leaders begin their journey to challenge gender norms These youth leaders, supported by other inspiring social entrepreneurs, have embarked on a powerful journey of leadership and social change through the 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 workshop held in Lucknow.  Aligned with the spirit of the 𝟭𝟲 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, these leaders are challenging entrenched gender norms by engaging young men and boys in their communities. Their journey focuses on addressing the roots of power and privilege to build alliances for a more equitable and inclusive society.  This cohort is ready to challenge gender norms in their communities in Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Indore, and Lucknow, demonstrating that change begins with youth-driven actions at the grassroots. Together, they are shaping a future free from gender-based violence. We are grateful to the Ford Foundation for supporting these journeys.

For years, she has been supporting them with relief materials, health and hygiene amenities, and access to government schemes and services. However, the community’s constant mobility hinders sustainable engagement. Recently, as part of the ComMutiny-vartaLeap ecosystem, Durga was introduced to the youth-centric development lens that nurtures young people as leaders taking charge of self and social transformation. Learning from the best practices of the youth work organisations in the collective, Durga started shifting her own approach. Instead of viewing young people as service beneficiaries, she now engaged them as allies and partners. Among other things, she focused on: - Embracing youth as individuals with unique identities. - Inviting them to explore their potential as active citizens. - Offering a supportive community to shape their futures without fear of failure. This shift was transformative. Durga created spaces for youth to exercise agency and shape their own journeys as proactive learners and leaders. She also inspired migrant families to stay longer, enabling young people to have sustainable access to these opportunities. Now, Durga envisions young people not just as beneficiaries but as leaders and drivers of social change. She is hopeful they will emerge as strong partners, working alongside Spandan to build their communities.
