#Women and #Impact – Two Passions Close to My Heart: When Ashish Fafadia interviewed me for a role Blume Ventures, he asked, “Where do you see yourself in 15 years?” Without hesitation, I replied, “Working for the upliftment of #women in #Bharat.” That answer has guided my journey, and it made me the obvious choice to represent Blume Ventures at Prabhav 2024, organized by the Impact Investors Council (IIC). Two packed days of insightful discussions, and here are my key takeaways on gender smart investing: - Gender-Smart Investing is about using capital intentionally and measurably to address gender disparity. It’s more than just a buzzword; it’s a mission. - The Pipeline Problem: Since COVID, the number of ‘investible startups’ led by women has dropped off a cliff. We need dedicated programs to ensure women founders get access to grants, mentorship, peer networks, and more. - Diversity is Comprehensive: It’s not just about backing women founders. It starts with venture firms building diverse teams, startups having more balanced boards, creating products that cater to women, ensuring safe workplaces, and fostering diversity across the entire value chain—from the boardroom to the warehouse. Equal ESOPs for women compared to their male peers is another critical step toward equity. - Anand Sri Ganesh shared some interesting data - out of 410 active VCs, only 2% are women partners. We need diversity at the check-writer level—more women on boards and in investment teams. Recruitment needs to be intentional if we want real change. Glad to be a part of a group called 'Women in Investing' that has 500+ women in VCs. Thanks to Maya Chandrasekaran and Sheeba D'Mello for creating this fabulous community. - Support Systems Matter: We need more initiatives like the Mudra Yojana for women and other schemes that empower female entrepreneurs. - Sector-Specific Wins: We’re seeing better diversity in sectors like biotech, climate, retail, health, and consumer brands. These industries are leading the charge, and we should take note. - Rural Women Are Powerhouses: As Jyotsna Krishnan rightly pointed out, women in rural India are inherently entrepreneurial. Microfinance can transform their potential. Kudos to our portfolio company, Kaleidofin Private Limited, which empowers under-banked customers by offering intuitive and tailored financial solutions. - The Road Ahead: We still have a long way to go, but it’s encouraging to see organizations like Impact Investors Council (IIC), British International Investment, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and many others come together to push for a more diverse workforce. Special shout-out to Ragini Pillai for driving some truly energetic and inspiring discussions on gender smart investing. With all the efforts - confident we are marching towards a better and more diverse Indian workplace :).
LIVE: Plenary 2 - Gender-Lens Opportunities in India | Prabhav 2024 | Day 2 Join us for a dynamic discussion featuring a diverse panel of experts who will share insights into the potential and opportunities within the gender lens investing space in India. Speakers include: -Jyotsna Krishnan Managing Partner at Elevar Equity & Co-founder of Enmasse -Ragini Pillai Executive - Gender & Diversity Finance at British International Investment -Rajat Arora, Principal Investment Officer & Head of Asia at Women's World Banking Asset Management -Sarita Raichura Director at Blume Ventures -Shalaka Joshi Gender Lead, South Asia at IFC - International Finance Corporation -Rajnish Kadambar Executive Director & Head ESG, Eversource Capital The panel explores strategies for originating gender-lens investments, discusses successful and unsuccessful case studies, and highlights emerging themes such as the care economy, femtech, and the role of women in STEM. Starting up is hard. GROWTH is even harder. Blume Ventures just concluded a curated Growth Roundtable in Silicon Valley along with Avendus and Next47 to dive deeper into these core challenges and opportunities faced by today's Founders, in the Enterprise Software context - spanning AI-first/SaaS/Infrastructure and Tooling/Security companies. All founders, and their intertwined stakeholders - customers, investors, board members, and their teams - seek the constant growth curve. In the past decade however, in some cases growth 'at all costs' has been encouraged and even celebrated. The markets thankfully have forced everyone to return to 'responsible growth' including an intense scrutiny around profitability and other key metrics. Operated under Chatham House rules, this curated roundtable comprising 'scaled- up founders', growth investors, founder-operators, Blume Ventures and other ceos, and industry experts, examined core issues such as - * Owning pre PMF: the initial market & customer discovery phase is a full contact sport! (you can't outsource it to partners) * AI native SaaS - How different is selling AI-native solutions vs traditional application layer (understanding buyer's operating vs innovation budgets) * Markets/Valuations - State of today's public markets: even for the best run companies, what are the supporting multiples? (best to work first-principles backwards from the end state, and thoughtfully construct entry valuations given market realties) * Recruiting an A-team: we often talk about "quality of revenues", but what are the drivers determining "quality of a team" (is the org build out robust enough to keep pace with product and sales build out?) * Northstar metrics for Seed -> Growth -> Late: how have those changed in the minds of top investors for raising rounds? A BIG THANKS to all our contributing Roundtable participants who carved out their precious time to share their invaluable insights, sparring with each other and thus spurring an invigorating exchange of new ideas, data points and takeaways! Blume Ventures and a SaaS-y September! The famed song by the rock band Green Day goes "Wake me up when September ends...." But, for our vibrant Indo-US cross-border SaaS+AI ecosystem, a slightly reversed verse is true "Wake me up when September begins!" 😀 We were elated to virtually kick off SaaStr week (and the entire month) with our annual flagship Blume Bash earlier this week on September 9th! We organized this SaaS & AI focused evening with our friends Avendus and co hosted at Next47 It was our pleasure to welcome and host our family of Blume Founders (Blumiers, as they are called!), and Investor, Corporate, CxO, Founder/Operator, Consulting/SIs, and other key stakeholder friends across the Silicon Valley and Indian ecosystem. The high energy level and enthusiasm from the evening was palpable, overshadowing any jetlag issues from our visiting friends! Three takeaways amongst many stand out in our increasingly vibrant and dynamic x-border corridor: 1). The India story is "real, here and now" 2). Innovation has evolved beyond pure vanilla-SaaS application layer, to vertical SaaS / infrastructure and dev/tooling, security, and AI-first applications. The intersection of SaaS/AI with deep tech is also exciting (eg space tech, smart manufacturing, robotics to name a few!) 3). The rise of seasoned "2x" founders who have cut their teeth at SaaS unicorns/soonicorns is another strategic advantage, driving a new surge of CxOs, product managers, developers and domain expert oriented fresh talent between Bangalore and San Francisco. Thanks to all who made it to our Blume Bash, and we wish the entire Founder community a productive September and rest of 2024. We're bullish about India's right to win and excited about Blume's commitment to this transformative space of SaaS and AI! Karthik B. This was an interesting one, and quite different from the advice you hear on consumer podcasts. The episode took an interesting turn when the discussion zeroed in on talent. Mr. Mariwala shared how he makes it a point to not only hire or work with subject matter experts, but also to learn from them first. His genuine curiosity and willingness to learn continuously was inspiring to see. He also challenged some common assumptions people have around how family-run businesses operate, which was quite insightful.
"We started off by hearing from the Middle East that Parachute Oil is being smuggled.
