The month of August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, a chance to raise awareness about a condition that affects more than 8 million Americans. Psoriasis speeds up skin cell growth, leading to itchy, scaly patches that can show up just about anywhere. It’s more than skin-deep, though—it can also bring joint pain and other health issues along for the ride. There are five types of psoriasis, with plaque psoriasis being the most common. It often starts between ages 15 and 25 but can happen at any age. While the exact cause is still a mystery, the immune system and genetics definitely play key roles. The study found that patients aware of their PRS experienced 77% fewer major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and a 39% reduction in diagnostic testing for coronary heart disease (CHD). This underscores the incredible potential of genomics in healthcare.
