As we continue our mission of bringing Diaspora Jews closer to Israel and fostering connections with Israelis, the additional tragic news we face this past week cannot be ignored. Last week, we mourned the loss of Danil Pacheniuk, a lone soldier from Uzbekistan who dedicated his life to Israel. He tirelessly continued to fight in the reserves until he fell last week from an explosive device in Gaza. Though a lone soldier, he was surrounded by a community that will forever honor his memory. May his soul rest in peace. In addition, on what should have been a day filled with the excitement of a new school year, tragedy struck again. Six hostages bodies were recovered to Israel, and another terrorist attack claimed three more lives. We are heartbroken by this news and deeply mourn all the lives lost. We join the global Jewish community in praying for the safe return of the remaining hostages, the safety of our soldiers, and for security and peace. May we soon share only good news.

We are extremely proud of Tevel and Alon for sharing this story and for taking this brave step. This is just one example of being resilient and being true to your own identity. Every year we have thousands of Fellows who take the decision to come to Israel on a Gap Year program and who invest in their future by taking a year ON and leaving an impact in Israel and growing theirselves, preparing themselves for the next step in their journey.

Last May, our daughter Tevel got a very exciting email: Out of the waiting list, she was accepted to Scripps College, one of the nation's highest-ranking and most competitive liberal arts colleges, part of the distinguished Claremont Colleges consortium. To say she was excited would be an understatement. It was literally her dream college. Tevel decided to take a gap year. It means her spot is reserved, and she will begin her studies at Scripps in the summer of 2024. In August 2023, Tevel started the Masa program in Israel, expecting a year of recreation, volunteerism, and relaxation before she goes to a four-year college. And then October 7th happened. A rocket dropped 700 feet from Tevel's apartment in Tel Aviv. Unlike most of her peers in the program who went back to their countries, Tevel decided to stay in Israel. When the program ended, she went to volunteer in Kibbutz Nirim, which was horrifically impacted by the massacre. She became a different person. The world also became different in many ways, including the fanatic outbursts throughout America's colleges. Unfortunately, this wave did not skip Tevel's future college consortium, with constant hateful protests, a decision to divest from Israel, and the elimination of a student exchange program with Haifa University. Last week, after months of deliberations and just before the start of the semester, Tevel made the gut-wrenching decision to withdraw from her dream college. With her permission, I'm sharing here the letter she sent to the college administration, to President Amy Marcus-Newhall, and to Dean DeMethra LaSha (Sha) Bradley, Ed.D:

It was honor to start today the Masa Israel Journey Fellowship Public Diplomacy Program together with Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel. It was an incredible day meeting our great leaders. Yehuda Yaakov presented the importance of the israeli narrative and social impact. Tamar Schwarzbard empowered us by explaining us how the Digital Diplomacy Bureau rocks on social media and hardly works to show Israel’s DNA Mordechai Denis Paul Rodgold enlighted us with his former work as an Ambassador for Israel around the world What a nice day to approach my future dreams 💙🇮🇱 AM ISRAEL JAI!

Alexa and Carley are two friends who spent 10 months on a life-changing journey with MITF in Israel, and now they're onto their next chapter together with Sword2Shekel. Through Masa, they learned how to better advocate for Israel and gave back to their communities which allowed them to continue doing meaningful work here in Israel. Sword2Shekel is a remarkable nonprofit that supports struggling Israeli businesses by purchasing their products and gift cards, which are then gifted to soldiers as tokens of appreciation. They’re excited to continue making a difference and spreading love through the act of giving. #VolunteerLife #IsraelAdventures #Sword2Shekel Masa Israel Journey Alexa Rosenholtz Carley Leibowitz 🇮🇱

The Masa family bows its head in deep mourning for the heavy disaster that befell the residents of Majdal Shams, our Druze brothers and sisters, and Israel as a whole. Precisely at the time when the Olympics are taking place in Paris, boys and girls who just wanted to play football found themselves at the heart of a brutal massacre by an enemy that knows no borders. We send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and pray that they may not know any sorrow.
