Coca Cola announced that they are scaling back their voluntary environmental goals around plastic. Their goal of using 50% of recycled material in its packaging by 2030 was replaced by aiming to use 35% to 40% recycled materials by 2035. Going back on their previous goal to recycle the plastic equivalent of every bottle it put into the world by 2030, they will instead “ensure the collection” of 70% to 75% of bottles and cans (without a timeline). Read more about it in the link below. These targets are emblematic of a larger problem with current measures to address the plastic pollution crisis. The burden gets disproportionately placed on downstream activities in the plastic supply chain. Scientists and economists agree that recycling efforts alone cannot mitigate the problem. That is why Biotic is focused on transforming the way that plastic is produced. Our PHBV polymers can be dropped into existing production methods to create a product that is fully biodegradable at the end of its life, and therefore does not need to rely on costly recycling schemes alone. More alarming research was published on the pervasiveness of toxic chemicals in our everyday plastic products. This study looked into black plastic household products (think kitchen spoons, takeout sushi trays, coffee makers, and children’s toys) in the U.S. market, and found that 85% of the 203 products screened contained flame retardants (FR). Exposure to FRs is associated with various health concerns including carcinogenicity, endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and reproductive and developmental toxicity. The researchers believe that the source of these FRs is from recycled content from electrical and electronic equipment that is unintentionally incorporated into other plastic household items. This unfortunate reality points to the absence of strong, enforced regulation preventing harmful chemicals from entering the recycling stream. Therefore, national and local policymakers should focus their efforts on ending the use of hazardous materials as well as ensuring that already existing harmful materials are disposed of properly and do not end up in our kitchens or in our bodies! We at Biotic present a different approach, biodegradable PHBV polymers to be used in plastic production that leave no toxins behind. Early this week in Busan, Republic of Korea, the United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiations Committee suspended what was meant to be their fifth and final meeting (INC-5) without an agreement on a Global Plastics Treaty. Instead of the start of 2025 being the time of implementation of much needed solutions, the group will meet again to continue negotiations. The main impasses are whether the treaty should reduce the total amount of plastic production, and whether toxic chemicals used to make plastics should be controlled with legally binding mechanisms. Opposition mainly comes from plastic, oil, and gas producing countries, while the push for these measures come from countries disproportionately impacted by the negative effects of plastic waste. The science is clear. We need to confront both upstream and downstream impacts of the current state of affairs with plastic. Unified action is both necessary and urgent. Eirik Lindebjerg from the WWF wisely reminded us that since the negotiations started, more than 800 million tonnes of plastic has been produced, over 30 million tonnes of which have leaked into our ocean. We remain steadfast in our hopes that this delayed timeline will be used, not as a way to stall efforts, but to ensure that an effective treaty is adopted at the next round of negotiations.
