We were delighted and honoured to welcome Ireland’s MEPs to a meeting in our Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny plant today ahead of them travelling to Brussels for the first formal session of the new European Parliament term. The MEPs in attendance were Billy Kelleher MEP (FF/ Renew Europe), Michael McNamara TD (Ind/ Renew Europe), Cynthia Ní Mhurchú (FF/Renew Europe), Barry Cowen TD (FF/Renew Europe), Kathleen Funchion (SF/The Left) and Nina Carberry (FG/ EPP). The aim of the meeting was for Tirlán to brief MEPs across constituencies and party groupings on the economic impact of the agricultural sector, particularly its contribution to employment opportunities and vibrant rural communities. An EY study has shown that Tirlán activity directly and indirectly supports 19,000 jobs in Ireland. Among the wide range of issues discussed at the meeting were the importance of retaining the Nitrates Derogation beyond 2025 and the unique and vital position of Ireland’s farming, dairy and grain sectors in Ireland’s overall economy. The MEPs also received a tour of Tirlán’s Innovation Centre and Ballyragget plant. Commenting John Murphy, Tirlán’s Chairperson said: “We are very pleased to welcome so many of our MEPs here ahead of what will no doubt be a very busy term in the European Parliament. It is vitally important to Ireland’s agri sector that our MEPs use their strong collective voice to advocate on behalf of farming families across the country.” “The dairy and grain industries are key to Ireland’s rural economy. Our politicians and policymakers need to understand and support our farmers. Agriculture as an indigenous employer cannot be underestimated and must be at the forefront of their work in Europe. In particular the retention of the derogation is a key ask of our MEPs. We look forward to ongoing dialogue with our representatives,” he added. #hereforgood

Over 300 farmers attended the Tirlán and Teagasc ‘Farming for the Future’ water quality event on the farm of Donal & Fiona Kavanagh, near Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow. The event offered farmers action-focused advice and showed the significant efforts that farmers are undertaking to stabilise and improve water quality in their region.     It is part of Tirlán’s collaborative ‘Farming for Water: River Slaney’ project with Teagasc and the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) that is working to improve water quality and assist Ireland in putting the best possible case forward for retention of the Nitrates Derogation.     The event heard that a focus on nutrient use efficiency (NUE) on farm can deliver or maintain higher output at a lower cost. Teagasc Director Dr. Frank O’Mara highlighted that it is possible to farm in derogation at the current 220kg of organic nitrogen (N) per hectare (N/ha) and deliver good water quality.   Dr. Lisa (Elisabeth) Koep, Chief ESG Officer, said the turnout for the event on Donal Kavanagh’s farm showcases how focused the farmer-owned cooperative’s suppliers are on improving water quality, while also improving the economic sustainability of their farms.   “Farmers are truly committed to making the changes on their farms to address water quality challenges. Events like this are taking place all over the country and are hugely important. It showcases to all of the stakeholders that we are committed as an industry to improving our water quality.”   For more read 👉 https://shorturl.at/5C7Z9 #hereforgood #farmingforwater #sustainability
