About us
TUH is one of Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospitals, adult, psychiatric and age-related healthcare on one site. The Hospital has 495 adult beds with 3,000 people on staff. The Hospital is a provider of local, regional and national specialties. It is also a national urology centre, the second largest provider of dialysis services in the country, a national centre for Urology and pelvic and acetabular fractures. Robotic surgery started in 2020 and we have recently been designated as a Trauma Unit (one of two within the newly established trauma network). The Hospital also has 67 paediatric beds under the governance of Children’s Health Ireland and 52 mental health beds under HSE governance. TUH is one of the two main teaching hospitals of Trinity College Dublin - specialising in the training and professional development of staff in areas such as nursing, health and social care professionals, emergency medicine and surgery, amongst many others. The hospital continues to develop pancreatic cystgastrostomy and related procedures, Microbiology at Tallaght provides the Irish diptheria reference lab and our microbiologist is the ECDC diptheria lead for Ireland. We also provide a pseudomonal antibodies reference lab service for Ireland, Chemical Pathology the Hospital Lab provides a clinical trace element service which accepts samples from around the country. We are the sole trace element centre within DMHG and indeed the Dublin hospitals, National Centre for Pelvic & Acetabular Fractures, National Centre for Retroperitoneal Sarcomas , National referral base for minimally invasive resection of bowel tumours –TEMS, National referral centre for Liver tumour resections, Regional Centre for Malignant Melanomas, Pancreatic & Hepatobiliary Diseases, and Regional Centre for Vascular Surgery

Research just published in the leading international journal “Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy” outlines research on the effectiveness of a blood test in identifying the presence of Alzheimer’s disease. The research carried out in the Institute of Memory & Cognition at TUH looked at the performance of a new blood test (plasma p-tau217) to detect the "amyloid plaques" that build up in the brain in people with Alzheimer's disease. The study, led by Dr. Adam Dyer, Geriatric Medicine Trainee (Specialist Registrar/SpR), TUH & Medical Gerontology, Trinity College Dublin examined the performance of this new blood test (plasma p-tau217) by using samples from the "biobank” which has been established at the TUH Institute of Memory & Cognition. As part of this biobank, patients who have symptoms and are undergoing a diagnostic lumbar puncture for the detection of Alzheimer’s disease opt to donate cerebrospinal fluid and blood samples for future research. This is crucial in examining the performance of these new blood tests in real-world clinical cohorts. We are fortunate at TUH that the arts and their inclusion in the very fabric of the Hospital are supported throughout the year with exhibitions, live music in our atrium, music therapy on the wards. Today we were treated to a 43 piece ensemble the Ricciotti Ensemble from the Netherlands. The Ricciotti Ensemble plays symphonic music everywhere & for all. Visiting Ireland on their ‘Shamrock Shuffle’ tour, we were delighted to host a visit. The 43 enthusiastic professional & amateur musicians treated patients, visitors & staff to some wonderful music. They played in our atrium, in our age related unit, Vartry Renal Unit and Oncology Dayward, finishing up with a lively concert outside for staff and patients. The music put a smile on everyone's faces, we wish them well as they move on to Galway and Cork. Míle Buíochas to all involved in organising and coordinating their visit.
