At the end of May, 51 Labs, MATTER’s women’s health accelerator, culminated with an in-person showcase in Chicago. The Accelerator focused on advancing the development of innovations addressing maternal mortality and morbidity in the United States and NUA SURGICAL were proud to be among the cohort.  The event opened with a keynote address by Elizabeth Cherot MD,MBA, president and CEO of March of Dimes who highlighted to importance of innovation if we are to see a change in outcomes. It was also a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our innovation in front of key opinion leaders in the women's health industry. The accelerator enabled us to develop some strong relationships across the maternal health sector and we look forward to building on these in the months and years ahead. These include the partners of the accelerator; Health Care Service Corporation, Laerdal Million Lives Fund, BayCare Health System, Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation, UChicago Medicine, Organon and Stryker. I also look forward to following the exciting journey of our fellow cohort companies: Armor Medical Inc, BAKS Medical, BioticsAI, Ciconia Medical, Elythea (YC S23), Expect Fitness, Malama Health, Partum Health, Vasowatch

In a world of fake news, it is important to take information from the right sources and when it comes to maternal and infant health, the March of Dimes is among the most credible. Maternal health needs to see change and unless we do something, the situation will get worse.

Only getting a chance now to recap on a great few days in San Francisco for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Annual Clinical Meeting. The meeting started last Friday and for me, the standout presentation was from ACOG Past President Dr Lisa Hollier. She updated the audience on startling new data from the CDC that maternal morbidity and mortality in the US continues to rise, and there was a clear call to action for Obstetricians to lead from the bedside and influence change. The data from the MMRC shows that 84% of Maternal Deaths in the US in 2020 were PREVENTABLE. By all accounts, this is unacceptable but on a positive note, there is a sense of urgency around fixing this, particularly with the wave of support and focus coming from a governmental level. It was great to catch up fellow #European innovator Ikram Guerd of Aspivix and see their progress on the US market. And also with our board chair, Elizabeth Garner, to discuss progress within our company. I left San Fran for Chicago on Monday for the #51Labs Showcase today alongside 9 other inspirational maternal health start ups. More on that in the coming days....
