Peter Patrick is a father of 3 originally from Antrim but now living in Wicklow. Peter was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Spring of 2012. "My advice to men about their prostate heath and their health generally is to be proactive, to have yearly bloods done. My GP picked up on the difference in PSA from my previously taken bloods. Without this, I would never have known. Give yourself the best chance of catching prostate cancer early when it is highly treatable. Stand Up for Your Prostate!" Gerry Kelly, a father of two and proud grandfather of four, was only 63 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer following a regular blood test that showed elevated PSA levels. As part of his managing his mental wellbeing throughout his treatment he wrote a book called 'Prostate, Piddling and Passion' to help normalise all things Prostate Health! Gerry's story "If I waited for symptoms, I could be dead now. I say that because 25% of my prostate had cancer and my diagnosis came about as a result of blood tests carried out by my doctor. So if you are a healthy young man, get yourself checked anyway. If there’s nothing there, good for you. If you find something amiss early stages, it can be fixed so that you will live, laugh and love for years to come. If you have a brother, a father, a partner, or friend who is shy of doctors, nag him or drag him to his local GP. Get tested, live longer. Stand Up for Your Prostate!" It is with heavy hearts we share the incredibly sad news that our wonderful ambassador and friend Jane Mc Coy has passed. Jane has been an integral part of the development of our #NoRegrets campaign for Bowel Cancer Awareness since it began in 2023. A campaign that began to amplify public awareness of early onset Bowel Cancer. Jane who was just 38 when diagnosed with stage 4 Bowel Cancer, was one of the founding members of Bowel Cancer Ireland, formerly the Irish Colorectal Cancer Community. Jane and all at Bowel Cancer Ireland we feel privileged to collaborate closely with you all in our joint mission to raise awareness and call for change. In our 2024 campaign launched in April Jane was front and centre leading the way as we called for action. She featured prominently in our campaign and supported, advised, and promoted the cause powerfully throughout. We launched a petition calling on the government to reduce the age for Bowel Screen from 59 to 50. Just 2 weeks ago we welcomed the news that the Health Information and Quality Authority is to assess whether the State should extend bowel screening to those aged between 50 and 54 years old. Jane was a huge part of making this happen, she has and will continue to help countless other people come out the other side of Bowel Cancer on a national scale. Jane was a beautiful woman inside and out who took a heartbreaking diagnosis and turned it into a mission to help others and strive for change. She has changed lives in those she met, those who read her story, those who watched the campaign videos and now those under 59 who will be able to avail of Bowel Screen earlier ultimately leading to earlier detection and more lives saved. Her impact cannot be measured. Jane believed that her diagnosis made her focus more on the truly important things in life like making memories and having adventures with her beloved husband John Joe and her 4 boys who were her absolute world. For those of us who had the pleasure and privilege of getting to know Jane in person, our hearts are broken by her loss, and we will hold onto the incredible chats, moments, and memories that we feel honoured to have had with her. Our deepest condolences to Janes loving husband John Joe, beloved sons Danny, Luke, Josh, and Kealan and all her extended family and friends. To her friends in Bowel Cancer Ireland, we are thinking of you all and sending love. Rest peacefully Jane, your impact will continue to ripple towards change. #RestInPeace
