In a significant deepening of Ireland’s engagement with Italy, the opening of Ireland’s first Consulate General in Milan was marked with a welcome reception for the new Consul General Maria Sheehy and farewell to the outgoing Honorary Consul of 30 years, Antonia Marsaglia. In attendance were key political, cultural, and economic contacts in Northern Italy. Ireland’s Ambassador to Italy, Patricia O’Brien said “The Government’s decision to open a Consulate General in Milan is testament to the importance that Ireland places on its relationship with Italy. The Consulate’s opening brings much opportunity for deeper and stronger engagement with the North of Italy. This builds on the dedication and work of Antonia Marsaglia, who has been a wonderful Honorary Consul for Ireland in Milan for over thirty years. I warmly welcome Consul General Maria Sheehy and Deputy Consul General Frank Bradley as the newest members of Team Ireland in Italy.” The new mission will be led by Consul General Maria Sheehy, who said, “I am excited to start work as Ireland’s first Consul General in the North of Italy. Milan is at the centre of economic activity in Italy, and is home to dynamic fashion, technological, food and industrial sectors. It also a hub for the vibrant Irish community in northern Italy. I look forward to working with the city and regional authorities to deepen and strengthen our links in Milan and the wider Northern regions.” While the Consulate General in Milan is in its initial set-up phase, those with consular services, visa or passport queries should continue to first contact the Embassy of Ireland in Rome. Further updates on the Consulate General’s public functions will issue on social media and on its website: Ireland.ie/milan (Traduzione in italiano nei commenti.)

📰| Today, the Tánaiste, Micheál Martin, announced a partnership with Trinity College Dublin and the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften to restore a biography of St. Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints, written by renowned German Celticist Heinrich Zimmer. The manuscript was damaged when Zimmer’s library burnt down in 1903, and the restoration will see it readily available for research once more. The largest street art festival in the world, Durga Puja, is a spectacle of art, light and colour; attended by millions of people every year. This year, with the support of the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi and Culture Ireland, Macnas - Spectacle Theatre Company co-created a massive public art installation with a local Indian artist, Behala Nutan Dal, attracting huge audiences. In 2024, Ireland is celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations with India, and Ireland at Durga Puja 2024 was the centrepiece of this celebration. The collaboration offered a unique opportunity to showcase Ireland’s culture, creativity and values, alongside our commitment to deepening our partnership with India 🇮🇪 🇮🇳 Together, artists from both countries created an amazing work of art that honoured both the Hindu goddess Durga and the Celtic goddess Danu. This fusion of Irish and Indian creativity offered a visual spectacle that reflected the power of cross-cultural collaboration and celebrated the empowerment of women and the feminine spirit. #ThisisIreland
