A Milestone in Food Safety Awareness The recent Emmy nomination of the Netflix documentary “Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food” for Best Current Affairs Documentary is a significant milestone in our ongoing struggle for #foodsafety. This recognition is not just about a film, but about the evolution of consumer behavior, information consumption, and the relentless pursuit of food safety reform. Thirty years ago, producing “Poisoned” would have been impossible. Then, consumer culture and expectations were different. Television network executives canceled a TV movie about the outbreak and my son’s death because, as I wrote in "Tragedy Wasn’t Enough" in The New York Times, it lacked the "sex and violence" that audiences supposedly demanded. The heartbreaking reality of foodborne illness was not deemed compelling enough for prime time. This nomination of “Poisoned” signals a significant shift. It shows that audiences are now more willing to engage with and demand transparency about the issues that affect their health and safety. Consumers are no longer passive recipients of information; they actively seek out knowledge and hold industries accountable. This change in behavior is crucial because it pressures food producers, regulators, and policymakers to prioritize safety over profit. However, while consumer behavior and information consumption have evolved, the fundamental issues within our food safety system persist. Despite numerous reforms and technological advancements, we continue to see a seemingly endless cycle of food safety failures. The consequences of these failures are devastating, often resulting in illness and death. Myriad empty chairs at family tables are a poignant reminder of these stakes. The Herculean effort required to achieve meaningful food safety reform is ongoing. This nomination is a step forward. It amplifies the voices of those affected by foodborne illness and shines a light on the systemic problems that need urgent attention. It is a call to action for consumers, industry leaders, and regulators to commit to creating a food system that truly prioritizes safety. This documentary, and the recognition it has received, represents hope. It is a testament to the power of storytelling in driving change. It reminds us that while the journey is long and arduous, progress is possible. As we continue to advocate for stronger food safety measures, let us remember the lives lost and affected by preventable tragedies. Let us honor them by ensuring that their stories lead to a safer future for all. This nomination of “Poisoned” is a significant milestone in our collective effort to prevent another family from experiencing the heartbreak that mine endured. It is a reminder that we must remain vigilant, informed, and committed to the cause of food safety. Riley’s story, and the stories of so many others, deserve nothing less. Join us at ACS Fall in Denver, Colorado, from the 18th - to the 22nd. The team will be speaking on the topic ‘Precision modeling of cumulative pesticide exposure’. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) requires the EPA to take into account “available evidence concerning the cumulative effects of such [pesticide] residues and other substances that have a common mechanism of toxicity”. We show how precision modeling enables industry to determine the safety of pesticide products, and regulators to create policies to mitigate risk to human health for new products or methods that enter the market.
