We’re delighted to introduce another of our Summer Scholars, Alex Neuroth. When cancers of the ovaries, pancreas, colon, rectum or appendix spread to the lining of the abdomen, a complex procedure is often needed. This surgery, known as CRS-HIPEC, involves removing visible tumours and using heated chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. While this can be life-saving, it can also be very hard on patients, especially if the person has a low fitness level or poor nutrition. That’s where the PANO Trial comes in! This research is looking at how exercise and nutrition programmes before and after surgery might help improve outcomes for people. During his Summer Scholarship at Dublin City University, Alex will be helping the wider PANO Trial team gather and analyse data to see if these supportive programmes make a difference to people in recovery. 📅 September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, and we're shining a light on Multiple Myeloma - a type of blood cancer with around 400 new cases diagnosed in Ireland each year. Multiple Myeloma is a blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow which is where our body produces all of the cells that make up our blood. Unfortunately, it's often diagnosed at an advanced stage and currently has no cure. To help raise awareness and support the people who are affected by this cancer, researchers at the Beaumont Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Cancer Centre, in collaboration with a panel of people with Multiple Myeloma, patient advocates, researchers and clinicians, have created a comprehensive booklet, ‘Multiple Myeloma in Ireland’. First time for me to participate in this type of satellite program, but it won’t be my last! 👨🔬 We are delighted to introduce another of our Summer Scholars, Marcus Hahn, who will be researching pancreatic cancer. More than 600 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year in Ireland, and only 1-in-10 patients survive 5 years post diagnosis. Pancreatic cancer tumours are usually rigid and hard, due to their large quantity of collagen. Due to this, pancreatic cancer is resistant to many conventional treatments including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. Marcus’ research will focus on a molecule called ‘syndecan-4’. One of the ways cancer cells interact with their surrounding tissue is through this molecule, and while it is present on all cells, it is found in large amounts in pancreatic cancer cells. By removing this, cells become less mobile, which could prevent them from spreading. Through understanding which part of the syndecan-4 protein is responsible for its function, Marcus’ research will provide for the development of drugs that will target syndecan-4, which could lead to a new treatment for pancreatic cancer. It is through research such as this that we can continue to work towards our goal of 100% survival for 100% cancers.
