Livestock population increment needs the adequacy of feed, both quantity and quality. Potential sources of feeds are therefore needed to be inventoried to ensure the sustainability of feed adequacy. This study aimed to estimate the potential amount of feed from rice straw in Java for supporting ruminant production in the region. The method of this study was descriptive and quantitative, using secondary data. The potential amount of rice straw as cattle and buffalo feed ingredients was calculated using the yield area of rice. The yield area was converted to grain production, which led to the rice straw production as feed availability. Dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) contents were used as a parameter. The percentage of the three parameters was collected from previous studies. The availability of DM, CP, and TDN from rice straws was then calculated based on the Animal Unit (AU). On the other hand, feed requirement was derived from the cattle and buffalo population. The population data were converted to AU, and then the total DM, CP, and TDN requirements were calculated based on previous studies (6.25 kg DM.AU-1, 0.66 kg CP.AU -1, and 4.3 kg TDN.AU-1). The feed availability and condition in Java province were compared and classified into three categories: surplus, sufficient, and deficit. The results showed that Banten, West Java, and Central Java provinces were sufficient to feed adequacy, whereas East Java and Yogyakarta provinces were deficient. This study suggests each province should utilize alternative feed resources in addition to rice straws to ensuring a sufficient feed supply for a ruminant.

The meta-analysis study was performed with OpenMEE application and used scientific articles from international journals according to the topic of the study. The superovulation parameters used in this study were the number of corpus luteum, the number of collected embryos, the number of viable embryos, degenerated embryos, unfertilized embryos, and the proportion of viable embryos. The results of a meta-analysis of 37 research results in 20 scientific articles showed feed protein level had a significant effect on increasing the number of corpus luteum, collected embryos, viable embryos, and the proportion of viable embryos. Meanwhile, the feed protein level had no significant effect on degenerated embryos and unfertilized ovum. It could be concluded that an increase in feed protein content had a positive effec...

In tropical nations such as Indonesia, heat stress is a key reason for the reduced productivity of dairy cattle. Heat stress is a combination of internal and external stimuli that affects an animal, raises its body temperature, and causes it to react physiologically. Most Indonesian dairy cattle are Friesian Holstein (FH), imported from European nations with a temperate environment with low temperatures in the range of 5°C–25°C. Indonesia has a tropical climate with a high ambient temperature that can reach 34°C during the day and the local relative humidity varies between 70% and 90%. Temperature and humidity are two microenvironment factors that may impact the production and heat release in FH cattle. More than 98% of the entire dairy cattle population in Indonesia is found on Java Island. On Java Island, there are between 534.22 and 543.55 thousand heads of cattle, while the dairy cattle population outside Java Island is just 6....

The world population will increase from 7 to 9 billion people in 2050. While the availability of land may not increase in the future, it may even not be used for agriculture. Scientists are trying to overcome this problem by creating technologies that can increase livestock productivity, one of which is through a genetically modified process. Genetically modified animals are animals that have been genetically modified for many purposes including yields and disease resistance. Although genetically modified animals are at the last stage of research and the possibility to entering Indonesia remains small, but government should prepare a regulation related to it. European countries and USA have regulations to control genetically modified animals. Malaysia also has applied a similar regulation since 2007. Currently, Indonesia has formed an authority that oversee...

In this area, the majority of cattle are grazed extensively in open grassland. The study aimed to evaluate the role of communal pasture range as a source of cattle feed. The method was descriptive with field verification, took place in Lar Badi, Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, which was one out of 59 pastures in Sumbawa. Data related to pasture conditions, beneficiary farmers, and institutional management were collected from different sources. Lar Badi has a total area 460 of ha, where Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health has a program to improve 100 ha of it with pasture grasses and legumes, such as Lamtoro tarramba and Brachiaria decumbens. The number of beneficiary farmers is 177 farmers from 10 farmer groups. The total number of cattle owned by the farmers is 2,941 heads. The combination of L. tarramba and B.decumbens has total production of 3,100 D...

The objective of this study was to measure methane production from several types of livestock manure. The experiment used a completely randomized design (CRD), with 6 kinds of livestock manure (cow, buffalo, goat, rabbit, chicken, and duck). Each treatment was repeated three times during 8 weeks. The research method used to measure methane production was a closed chamber method, with intervals of 5 minutes. Methane samples were analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of the study showed that during eight weeks of observation, the kinds of livestock manure significantly (p <0.05) affected methane production at weeks 3, 6, 7, and 8. In those weeks, duck manure produced the highest methane production compared to other manure. Total methane gas production during 8 weeks observation which produced by duck manure was 97.99 mg g−1. Meanwhile, the lowest methane produced by rabbit manure (2.70 mg g−1). The st...

Over the last decade, local chicken farms have been growing rapidly to supply the increasing demand of local chicken meat. The government continues to disseminate and spread high-quality local chicken breeds, including KUB Chicken. This study aims to analyse the spatial distribution of day-old local chicken (DOC) as part of dissemination program in Bogor Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The method of this study was descriptive with field observation to collect primary data. Secondary data was used as comparison. The amount of DOC was calculated from three years dissemination program (2018, 2019 and 2020). The results showed 80,120 DOC were distributed to 204 farmers groups in 35 subdistricts in Bogor in the last three years. Cibungbulang Subdistrict has received the most DOC and Cisarua Subdistrict has received the least the DOC with the number of 8,846 DOC and 352 DOC, respectivel...
