  • 🎻 Orchestrating a new approach to correcting errors in cancer cells 🎻 Our researchers have discovered how the ‘musicians’ of a cell—tiny structures called microtubules—move during cell division. In cancer cells, these microtubules move too fast, leading to mistakes in how genetic material is distributed, which helps cancer grow and spread. Using advanced “speckle” microscopy, dr. sc. Iva Tolić, together with her team—dr. sc. Patrik Risteski, dr. sc. Jelena Martincic, PhD, Dr. Mihaela Jagric, Ana Petelinec (all PhD candidates at the time), and graduate student Erna T.—uncovered the mechanism behind this movement. These researchers were the true conductors of this discovery, revealing how microtubule speed could potentially be adjusted to correct errors in cancer cells. This fundamental research is an essential first step to understanding cancer’s inner workings, opening new possibilities for targeted treatments in the future—because, just like in music, slowing down the tempo can sometimes uncover the solutions we need. #RuđerBoškovićInstitute #CancerResearch #FundamentalScience #ScienceForTheFuture

  • We proudly celebrate 10 years of CERIC-ERIC consortium, a prestigious European scientific network connecting top-tier research institutions. CERIC-ERIC is an infrastructure consortium providing scientists with access to cutting-edge equipment for materials research, drug development, and environmental protection. We're particularly proud that Croatia leads in engagement - boasting the highest per capita participation rate among all consortium members. Croatia joined as a full member in 2017, through Ruđer Bošković Institute by contributing our unique accelerator system. Our infrastructure has already supported 50 international research projects, with CERIC-ERIC recognizing our potential through a €400,000 investment in new equipment and funding for two doctoral positions. The future brings even more excitement - by the end of 2025, our accelerator system will move to a new facility, part of the €72 million O-ZIP project. This new infrastructure will enable more advanced experiments and strengthen Croatian science's position in Europe.

  • "Ants are ideal for studying long-term climate change effects because their colonies remain in one location for decades, making them excellent bioindicators." said Dr. Jelena Bujan in an interview for Zaposlena, časopis za uspješnu ženu After earning her Ph.D. at the University of Oklahoma and conducting postdoctoral research in Panama and Switzerland, Dr. Bujan returned to Croatia to launch the IGNITE project, securing €1.5 million in funding through the prestigious ERC Starting Grant. Her research focuses on the adaptations of ants to extreme conditions on Mediterranean islands. The findings are crucial for understanding the impacts of climate change on biodiversity and exploring the potential of microclimates in mitigating global warming.
