⛔FSC has blocked 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐦𝐬 (𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐦𝐬 𝐄𝐜𝐨 𝐓𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐨. 𝐋𝐭𝐝., 𝐅𝐒𝐂-𝐂𝟏𝟓𝟗𝟖𝟏𝟕) for making false claims about its bamboo toilet paper sold in the UK. Between May 2021 and March 2024, Join Bums labeled its products as “𝐅𝐒𝐂 𝟏𝟎𝟎%,” yet reported no sales or purchases of FSC-certified material and missed two surveillance audits. Triggered by a British media investigation, FSC requested its assurance partner, Assurance Services International (ASI), to investigate. ASI confirmed Join Bums misrepresented the bamboo content, with tests showing high amounts of acacia and eucalyptus instead. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗨𝗗𝗥, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.  Every small step forward matters. The sooner we all work together, the closer our world's forests will be to a sustainable – and deforestation-free – future. What can we do now? 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗘𝗨𝗗𝗥 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆. We've compiled a handy list of the steps companies can take right now. For instance, create an inventory of products affected by the Regulation, review due diligence systems, communicate with trading partners to flag the type of information they will be requesting, and assess the process and technical platforms they'll use to exchange and verify transaction data. 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁: 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. FSC Certificate Holders already have access to the solutions provided by FSC Aligned Certification for EUDR, including the FSC Regulatory Module and FSC Risk Assessment Framework. Companies can reach out to their relevant certification body now to confirm their intention to use FSC Aligned for EUDR for their journey to compliance. 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨𝗗𝗥 𝗽𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲. They take time, so getting started now is key. Companies can start their own risk assessments using the FSC Risk Assessment Framework or keep an eye out for the FSC Risk Assessments currently in development for 20 prioritized countries, which will start becoming available in 2025. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲? Two years ago, we launched an initiative to fast-track Biodiversity Assessments in FSC-certified forests. Together with WWF, IKEA, and other partners, we have been working to enhance the understanding and monitoring of the effects of FSC certification on biodiversity. Today, on #COP16 Forest Day, we share the initial findings that indicate positive impacts of FSC certification: 🌿 In Brazilian FSC-certified plantations and their set-asides, we identified over 300 threatened species—primates, reptiles, plants, birds, and large mammals. 🌿 In Finland, FSC certification is associated with a large increase in area (460%) dedicated to conservation, compared to the conservation area set by law. 🌿In Sweden, key forest indicators and red-listed species have remained stable in certified forests over the past two decades. 🌿FSC-attributable set-aside areas enhance forest connectivity in both Brazilian and Finnish landscapes.
