About us
The Hong Kong Jockey Club's century-old legacy of philanthropic giving has presented an exceptional opportunity for the Club to establish the Institute of Philanthropy (loP), a "think-fund-do" tank dedicated to promoting philanthropic thought leadership at the local, regional and global levels together with its funder partners, for the common good for societies everywhere. Anchored in the East, the loP acknowledges Asia's growing significance in the global philanthropic ecosystem. With an initial sum of HKD6.8 billion (USD870 million) from The Hong Kong Jockey Club and its Charities Trust, the loP would provide a convening platform to bridge regional and global philanthropic efforts, scale strategic and innovative solutions for global & regional and challenges, and professionalise the philanthropic sector. The loP was formally inaugurated at the Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum in September 2023.

The Institute of Philanthropy (#IoP) was pleased to support the 2024 Gairdner Global Health Symposium, hosted by the Gairdner Foundation on October 25 in Toronto, Canada. This year’s theme, “Pandemic Preparedness: From Vaccine Technology to Global Health Policy”, brought together leading global health experts and renowned scientists who shared transformative insights and innovations essential for future pandemic responses. We were honoured to feature distinguished speakers, including Dr Gagandeep Kang, the 2024 John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award laureate, Prof Jane Halton, Chair of CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), Prof Peter Hotez MD PhD, Endowed Chair in Tropical Pediatrics at Texas Children's Hospital; and Prof Malik Peiris, Chair Professor of Virology at The University of Hong Kong’s School of Public Health. Their discussions underscored the importance of innovation in vaccine technology and the policies that shape global health responses. Dr Gabriel Leung, Executive Director of Charities and Community of The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Director of #IoP, remarked, “COVID 19 had shown us what frontier vaccine technology, including clinical trials and epidemiology, can achieve a need, that is now sadly reinforced by the currently ongoing outbreaks of Marburg, Mpox and Bovine H5. The pandemic had also laid bare why sociology and anthropology are fundamental to vaccines population impact ultimately.” We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all speakers and participants for contributing to the success of this event. Together, we are committed to advancing meaningful change in global health policy and practice! #GlobalHealth #ImpactfulPhilanthropy #IoP #HKJC #HKJCCharitiesTrust

Asian philanthropy stretches back hundreds of years. Institutional philanthropy, however, is in its infancy. In fact, half of Asia’s largest philanthropies are under 20 years old, compared to just 20 per cent of the world’s largest funders in the same period. According to a landmark report launched at The Hong Kong Jockey Club's #PBC2024, findings show the stark divide in institutional philanthropy between the so-called west and east. 👇

At #PBC2024, #IoP unveiled the joint publication, ‘Examining Trust and Measurement in Asian Philanthropy’, by IoP and McKinsey & Company. This report provides an in-depth look at the evolving landscape of social impact measurement in #Asia, highlighting how philanthropies in the region are adopting different aspects of trust-based philanthropy. We’re excited to share valuable insights from nearly seventy influential leaders and experts in the field! To kick off our series of insights, let’s start with the fundamental yet important question: What is #Trust-Based #Philanthropy? The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated flexible funding practices among donors, enabling them to respond swiftly to the unique challenges faced by non-profits. This shift has sparked a growing interest in trust-based philanthropy, igniting discussions about its implications for measuring impact. As we explore how this model can transform practices in philanthropy — especially in Asia, a region poised to drive global change — how familiar are you with this approach? Trust-based philanthropy seeks to foster equitable power dynamics between funders and grantees, empowering local communities to chart their own paths to meaningful change. It includes six specific grantmaking practices, as defined by the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project. A shining example of this is Yield Giving, established by MacKenzie Scott in 2019. They exemplify trust-based philanthropy through their approach to due diligence and unrestricted giving in their two distinct grantmaking strategies: Quiet Research and Open Call. Curious to learn more? In the fast-changing landscape of #SocialInnovation, effective #ImpactMeasurement is essential for driving meaningful change. In the special supplement to the Stanford Social Innovation Review, sponsored by #IoP, Lisa Hehenberger’s article, "Prioritizing Impact Measurement in the Funding of Social Innovation," offers critical insights for both impact investors and grant makers. In order to inform strategies and improve outcomes in non-profits, Hehenberger emphasises the importance of not just the collection of data, but insights into how organisations use it to boost their management. As impact investors concentrate on metrics and grant makers promote experimentation, collaboration between the two ends of the spectrum will empower both groups to develop accountable standards and systems that benefit their beneficiaries. 🔍 Key Takeaways: 1. Developing Impact Accounting and Setting New Standards → Design rigorous standards for impact measurement to maximise social investments by ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective decision-making. 2. Building Transparency and a Culture of Learning → Take social innovation beyond promotion by aligning missions with solid data and developing a clear understanding of impact and a stronger focus on listening to beneficiaries and learning from mistakes. 3. Funding Innovation into the Future → Impact investors must evolve their measurement processes to incorporate social and environmental factors. → Grant makers need to prioritise solid impact data and beneficiary involvement to ensure accountability and effective decision-making. 💡Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/esKQiBfs Let’s explore the special #SSIR supplement to learn more about social impact measurement and its use in philanthropy. 👉 Read the full supplement here: https://lnkd.in/eG6n73mN #ImpactfulPhilanthropy #IoP #HKJC #HKJCCharitiesTrust
