Constructed 28 metres deep into the ground and anchored on solid granite, the HKSH Proton Therapy Centre is not only a breakthrough in cancer care but also an engineering miracle to behold.   Our meticulously designed proton therapy system comprises two 150-ton half-rotating gantries, two 15m tall radiation-shielded bunker chambers, a four magnet-ring synchrotron and an advanced bream transport system across two levels. The system is ingeniously positioned in a vertically stacked format, making it an excellent example of compact design configurations suitable for densely populated urban areas like Hong Kong.   This video will take you on a journey to witness the establishment of Hong Kong’s first-ever proton therapy centre which will bring new hope and new treatment option to cancer patients in the city and beyond.   #HKSH #HKSHMedicalGroup #HongKongSanatoriumHospital #TheLiShuFanMedicalFoundation #HealthTech #Medical #MedicalEducation #MedicalResearch #MedTech #MedicalTechnology #ProtonTherapy #Research

Instead of spending a normal day in the classroom, bright young minds who are charting a career in healthcare opted for a behind-the-scenes tour at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital and the HKSH Eastern Medical Centre. In collaboration with HKUMed – The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and other academic institutes, we recently welcomed 180 secondary and tertiary students from local and overseas. These students had the opportunity to observe healthcare professionals in action and gained valuable insights into how different medical departments collaborate to deliver holistic and patient-centric care. They also gained firsthand knowledge of our state-of-the-art facilities, including Hong Kong’s only proton therapy system. The educational tours were well-received by participants, providing them with a unique experience in the dynamic world of healthcare. We look forward to inspiring more aspiring youths about the infinite possibilities and life-changing impact the medical field can have on their future. #HKSH #HKSHMedicalGroup #HongKongSanatoriumHospital #HKSHEasternMedicalCentre #MedicalEducation #HealthcareEducation #MedTech #MedicalTechnology #ProtonTherapy #HealthcareInnovation #Medical

  • HKSH Medical Group’s introduction of first proton therapy system to Hong Kong last year marked a significant advancement in cancer treatment. To let more cancer patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals have a better understanding of this most advanced and precise form of radiotherapy treatment for cancer, HKSH recently joined hands with Cancerinformation.com.hk to co-host a seminar featuring our Proton Therapy Centre Co-Director, Dr Amy Chang Tien Yee. Through sharing different cases and latest international research findings, Dr. Chang introduced the basis of proton and how proton therapy differentiates from conventional radiation therapy. She also highlighted the clinical applications and benefits of proton therapy in treating various cancer types, including brain, head and neck, breast and prostate cancers and its unique benefits for paediatric cancer patients. The audience showed great interest in this breakthrough treatment by proactively raising questions and participating in discussions. #HKSH #HKSHMedicalGroup #HongKongSanatoriumHospital #CancerBattle #HKSHEasternMedicalCentre #HealthTech #Medical #MedicalEducation #MedicalResearch #MedTech #MedicalTechnology #ProtonTherapy

Distinguished community leaders recently gathered at the 9th Dr Li Shu Fan Oration to commemorate the legacy of the Hong Kong & Sanatorium Hospital’s founder. The annual event features an orator of prominence with significant contribution to the betterment of the community and this year, we have the great honour to have Prof. Lo Chung Mau, Secretary for Health, to share his wisdom and insights. Citing Dr. Li 's motto of "to leave the world a little richer than when I found it", Prof Lo expounded on the philosophy of making the world ‘richer’ not in terms of wealth but betterment in health and other aspects. Sharing a mirrored path with Dr Li as a doctor, a hospital administrator and a political officer, Prof Lo highlighted that Maximisation of Benefits against Risks, Prioritisation of Resources and Continuous Innovation are the crucial commonalities for navigating through the challenges of ever-growing demands with finite resources in healthcare and ultimately leading to a better and healthier community for all. During the event, HKSH’s CEO Dr Walton Li stressed that the Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation, now the sole owner of HKSH, would continue to serve as a platform for public-private collaboration which would extend to partners in the Greater Bay Area and worldwide. COO Mr Wyman Li also shared our recent achievement of introducing Hong Kong’s first proton therapy centre with a highly professional team of certified oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists and radiotherapists. We hold ourselves to the highest standards, which are on par with other major proton therapy centers around the world, and we will continue to follow the treatment protocol established by the Mayo Clinic, bringing new hope to cancer patients in the city and beyond. #HKSH #LiShuFanMedicalFoundation #ProtonTherapy #MedicalAdvancement #HonoringLegacy

HKSH is committed to delivering the highest standard of patient care through continuous training and professional development of healthcare workers. We established the Continuing Nursing Education Division in 2009, offering comprehensive training programmes for nurses and allied health workers. Our commitment to excellence led us to collaborate with prestigious organisations like UCLA Health, University of California, San Francisco, John Hopkins University, University of Toronto, and the American Heart Association (AHA), providing international on-the-job professional development opportunities. Catering to the evolving healthcare needs of our society, HKSH recently took a step forward with the establishment of the Institute for Innovation & Professional Development (IIPD), a dedicated platform to empower healthcare workers to engage in lifelong learning and deliver the highest standard of patient care. The IIPD goes beyond HKSH, extending its outreach to professionals of other public and private medical organisations in the region. It offers specialised, accredited training programmes, workshops, and conferences that keep healthcare professionals at the forefront of advancements in the field. The IIPD is also committed to promoting public health in the community. By offering AHA-accredited resuscitation programmes and physiotherapist-led courses on elderly fall prevention, we equip caregivers, domestic helpers, and the general public with essential knowledge and skills in emergency and elderly care. Join us in making a difference in healthcare through lifelong learning, innovation and excellence in patient care. • Various pain conditions induced by illnesses or stress is an increasingly prevalent health issue in Hong Kong which does not only impact one’s physical health but also mental wellbeing and quality of life. HKSH Medical Group today released findings of its survey on pain conditions amongst Hong Kong people and found that as high as 75% of the 3,000 respondents had experienced pain in the previous month, with females being the majority. 43% of the respondents reported chronic pain lasting for 3 months or longer, of which 27% had even experienced long-term pain for over a year. About half of the respondents expressed that pain has affected their daily life, leading to emotional and psychological distress. Multiple approaches are generally adopted to address these pain conditions with 31% seeking medical attention concurrently.   While the causes of chronic pain are not easily traceable, and the degree and scope of pain experienced by each patient may vary, the medical field has consistently advocated for a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain for effective pain management. If members of the public suffer from persistent pain for more than 3 months and the possibility of infection and tumor has been eliminated, they should consult pain specialists when the current methods of pain relief are insufficient. Over 200 staff and friends of HKSH Medical Group participated in the 16th “Walk for A Vision” event on Sunday, organised by HKSH Village Volunteers. Together, we raised almost half a million for Sweet Home Psychological Wellness Centre to sponsor 38 emotionally distressed children from Primary 1 to Secondary 6 to receive comprehensive psychological and emotional support services.   As medical professionals, we not only attend to people’s physical illnesses but also deeply care about the emotional well-being of the #community. There has been a notable increase of student suicide cases in Hong Kong in recent years, attributed to emotional difficulties. Through Sweet Home’s services, we hope to identify students in need and provide timely interventions and support to help them manage their emotions and handle challenges with a positive mindset.   Since 2009, the annual “Walk for A Vision” event has successfully raised over HK$8.6 million for 14 beneficiary organisations, supporting various health and medical-related initiatives. This year, we are grateful for the generous donations and support from platinum sponsor FWD Insurance, gold sponsor Siemens Healthineers as well as participating teams from HKUMed – The University of Hong Kong’s School of Nursing and Wing Tai Properties Limited among others.   See the event press release for details: https://shorturl.at/aenpr   #HKSH #HKSHMedicalGroup #HongKongSanatoriumHospital #Walkathon #Charity #FWDInsurance #Siemens #WingTaiPropertiesLimited #HKUMed
