Century City partner Farshad Morè, recently named Real Estate Lawyer of the year at Law.com's California Legal Awards, spoke with The Recorder about how the practice of real estate has changed from a drafting and negotiating relationship to more of a counseling relationship. Farshad also shared his pride in offering senior associates the opportunity to “lead the charge” and his advice to new lawyers never to stop thinking about a client’s business goals. “The best way to counsel and advise your clients is by keeping these goals in mind and framing your advice around them. Be your client's counselor and adviser — not just another lawyer.”

Gibson Dunn advised Related Argent on its joint venture with NTT UD Europe Limited (a subsidiary of leading Japanese telecommunications group Nippon Telegraph and Telephone) to create the third Build-to-Rent development at Brent Cross Town, a 180-acre, £8 billion mixed-use park town in north London that is being constructed in partnership with Barnet Council. The development will comprise 226 rental homes across three blocks in a prime location between Claremont Park and the new high street, Merchant Street, three minutes' walk from the Brent Cross West railway station, which connects with St Pancras International in approximately 12 minutes. This third BtR development will bring the rental portfolio at Brent Cross Town to around 760 homes, all managed by Related Argent. Our London corporate team was led by partner Paddy Hennessy and included partner Jeremy Kenley, associates Ciaran Deeny and Emily Mattley, and trainee solicitor Mostafa Mabrouk (Dubai). London partner Sandy Bhogal and associates Sophie Walshe and James Chandler advised on tax. Partner Attila Borsos (Brussels) and associate Alana Tinkler (London) advised on anti-trust and FDI. Los Angeles partner Lauren Blas has had a wide-ranging pro bono practice: from filing amicus briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court advocating for reproductive justice, to representing individual asylum seekers and survivors of domestic violence in the trial courts and on appeal, to bringing and trying affirmative action cases seeking to vindicate civil rights. Pro bono work has always been a foundational part of Lauren’s practice. In addition to being a source of joy and purpose, Lauren’s pro bono representations have brought about many “firsts,” including her first hearing as junior lawyer, her first appellate argument before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and her first experience trying a case as a plaintiff in a civil rights case. Lauren now uses her pro bono practice to help junior lawyers at the firm get their own “first” legal experiences. In June 2024, Lauren was one of the Gibson Dunn lawyers recognized with the 2024 California Lawyer Award of the Year for her work on Jones v. City of Los Angeles, described as a “first-of-its-kind jury verdict in a historic civil rights case.”
