Aurex Group’s Sebastian Doolan on why prior salaries shouldn’t define job offers and how changes in the US could influence APAC. Agree or disagree? Let Sebastian know in the comments below.

𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀. In recent years, a growing movement has emerged in the US to prohibit employers from asking candidates about their current or past salaries. I wholeheartedly support this initiative. At its core, it promotes the idea that compensation should be based on the value of the role and the skills of the individual, rather than their historical earnings. 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀, 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 Imagine a product manager position at a Proptech firm focused on innovative new products that requires expertise in user experience design and green field projects. 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔 has five years of experience working at a smaller, innovative startup focused on creating user-friendly property management software from scratch. They earned $90,000, where their contributions directly led to a 30% increase in user engagement. 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕 has the same level of experience but worked at a large, established tech company in the real estate sector, earning $120,000. While they managed a larger team, their role primarily involved overseeing existing products rather than driving new features or improvements. Candidate A is automatically benchmarked at lower salary solely based on their past earnings, despite being more suitable and capable of delivering greater value in the role. Furthermore, the salary they accept now will influence their compensation in future positions, perpetuating this cycle for the rest of their career. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲s The current practice of basing salary offers on past earnings creates significant challenges in recruitment. It leads to a cycle of undervaluing talent, perpetuating wage gaps and creates a lot of missed opportunities for both companies and candidates who would otherwise be a great fit for each other. Additionally, many companies remain unrealistic about what they should be paying to attract top talent, resulting in missed opportunities to hire exceptional candidates who would drive the business forward. Also, a key factor contributing to employee turnover is that individuals often feel unfairly compensated compared to their peers or friends in similar roles who earn more. In my opinion, addressing this disparity would significantly enhance employee retention and overall satisfaction. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗖 As the movement for pay equity continues to gain momentum in the U.S, we can anticipate similar changes in the APAC region. While cultural differences and varying labour markets may impact the timeline, the growing emphasis on equity and fairness in hiring practices suggests that it won’t be long before these principles take root in APAC as well. Agree or disagree? Let me know.
