Mayfield made significant progress in picking up the intricacies of new coordinator Liam Coen's offense throughout the offseason, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. "There's a lot fewer mistakes and 'M.E.'s," said head coach Todd Bowles. "He has a lot more audibles on his plate than he did in the past and he's getting them down very [well]." Bowles' comments came in the midst of the mandatory minicamp the Buccaneers held earlier in June, following a particularly productive penultimate practice of the offseason in which Mayfield spread the ball around effectively. Mayfield has had plenty of opportunity to progressively get a handle on the offensive system, as he was also part of 10 voluntary OTA practices before minicamp. While there figures to be some additional growing pains with the offense, there will be multiple weeks of training camp and preseason games for Mayfield and a top quartet of incumbent pass catchers in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Trey Palmer and Cade Otton to continue building chemistry within it.

Latest Buccaneers News
Baker Mayfield : Makes progress learning offense
Randy Gregory : Not at minicamp
Gregory was not in attendance for minicamp Tuesday, JC Allen reports. Gregory currently has an open lawsuit against the NFL for discrimination in regards to a $500,000 fine he received last season for using THC, which he was prescribed to treat anxiety and PTSD. The Nebraska product signed a one-year contract with the Bucs in April and his absence Tuesday was not excused. It's not clear if Gregory will report to minicamp before its end, or what his status is for training camp.
Vita Vea : Drops weight for third downs
Coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday that Vea has dropped weight this offseason in the interest of playing increased snaps, including third downs, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Vea is coming off a career 2023 campaign, with a new high of 43 tackles (28 solo), while his 5.5 sacks fell just one short of tying a career-best mark. An ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks provides Vea with more IDP value than the usual defensive tackle, so if he can keep racking up sacks despite dropping weight, the addition of third-down reps could provide a significant boost to the 29-year-old's fantasy prospects.
Tristan Wirfs : Attending minicamp
Wirfs is present Tuesday for the start of June minicamp, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports. His presence for the first mandatory practices of the offseason suggests Wirfs isn't holding out, although he could still change his mind before training camp if he doesn't have a long-term contract by then. He's scheduled to play out 2024 under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract for $18.2 million, which is well south of the average annual value he figures to eventually get on a multi-year deal. Lions RT Penei Sewell signed a four-year, $112 million extension earlier this offseason, with $85 million in guarantees and $43 million guaranteed at signing. Wirfs likely expects a similar contract and could even make a case for being paid more than Sewell.
Sterling Shepard : Links up with Tampa
Shepard agreed to a one-year contract with the Buccaneers on Thursday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Shepard spent the past eight years with the Giants, playing 90 of a possible 131 regular-season games. He's had a hard time staying healthy for years now, but until last season he consistently drew targets whenever available. After catching just 10 passes in 15 games last season, the 31-year-old will compete for a depth role with Tampa Bay.
Cody Thompson : Finds work in Tampa Bay
Thompson signed with the Bucs on Wednesday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. With Deven Thompkins (hamstring) sent to injured reserve recently, Thompson gives the Bucs another veteran wideout body to bring to camp. In 12 career games with the Seahawks from 2021-23, Thompson caught one pass for 10 yards.
Deven Thompkins : Placed on injured reserve
Thompkins (hamstring) reverted to IR on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Thompkins will now likely miss the 2024 campaign with his shift to injured reserve. However, if he can reach an injury settlement with the Buccaneers, he'd be free to find an opportunity elsewhere once he can prove himself healthy.
K.J. Britt : Ready for bigger role
Head coach Todd Bowles indicated Wednesday that Britt is ready to play all three downs and is becoming a leader on defense, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Britt has also been grasping the mental part of the game according to coach Bowles. The 24-year-old recorded 29 tackles (16 solo) and one pass defensed last season. It looks like he will be in line for a bigger role in the upcoming campaign when he starts at inside linebacker next to Lavonte David.
