Keegan Murray : Team option picked up
The Kings exercised Murray's team option for the 2025-26 season Thursday,Brenden Nunes of KHTK Sactown Sports 1140 reports. Murray is now set to remain in Sacramento for at least the first four seasons of his career. In 2023-24, the 24-year-old forward averaged 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals in 33.6 minutes across 77 appearances, all of which were starts. Murray is set to start at power forward for the Kings once again this season.
Keon Ellis : Entering camp as starting SG
Coach Mike Brown said Tuesday that Ellis will enter training camp as the Kings' starting two-guard, though the team will explore its options when Kevin Huerter (shoulder) returns from injury, Frankie Cartoscelli of KHTK Sactown Sports 1140 reports. Ellis saw an uptick in minutes and production during his second year with the club, during which he averaged 5.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.9 steals across 17.2 minutes per game in 57 appearances (23 starts). The 24-year-old missed significant time due to an ankle injury and carved out an inconsistent role in his return. However, as the season progressed the guard became a mainstay in the starting five. Malik Monk seems to be content with a role as the Kings' Sixth Man, meaning Ellis will have an opportunity to prove he is worth the starting role -- at least until Huerter returns.
Malik Monk : Content with Sixth Man role
Coach Mike Brown said Tuesday that Monk (knee) will be the Kings' Sixth Man in 2024-25, Frankie Cartoscelli of KHTK Sactown Sports 1140 reports. Fresh off a second-place finish for the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award, Monk inked a four-year, $78 million deal with the Kings this offseason. Kevin Huerter (shoulder) isn't cleared for 5-on-5 work yet, so Keon Ellis is operating as the starting shooting guard next to De'Aaron Fox. Monk is certainly talented enough to start for the Kings even when they're at full strength, but his impact off the bench is undeniable. Playing with the reserves also allows Monk to have the ball in his hands more, increasing his fantasy value.
Kevin Huerter : Ramping up ahead of season
Huerter (shoulder) has been ramping up his individual workouts ahead of the regular season, and he said Monday that his final step is "really just getting 5-on-5 full-contact," Matt George of ABC 10 Sacramento reports. Huerter is six months out from suffering a dislocation and labral tear to his left shoulder. The 26-year-old said Monday that he is not yet cleared for contact, but he feels good and could be cleared for 5-on-5 action before the beginning of the regular season. Huerter appeared in 64 regular-season outings last season, during which he averaged 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists across 24.4 minutes per game.
Jordan McLaughlin : Suffers ankle sprain
McLaughlin sustained a Grade 2 right ankle sprain during offseason workouts and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, James Ham of ESPN 1320 Sacramento reports. Fresh off inking a one-year deal over the summer, McLaughlin's start to the season will not be what he had in mind. When healthy, he is expected to compete with Keon Ellis for the backup point guard role behind De'Aaron Fox. The 28-year-old McLaughlin shot a career-best 47.2 percent from three-point range across 56 regular-season games in Minnesota last season to go along with 3.5 points and 1.3 rebounds across 11.2 minutes.
Trey Lyles : Suffers groin strain
Lyles suffered a left groin strain during offseason workouts and is expected to be sidelined three weeks, James Ham of ESPN 1320 Sacramento reports. When healthy, Lyles projects to provide frontcourt depth this season in Sacramento behind Domantas Sabonis and Alex Len. Thus, he looks to be a fringe-rotational player. His timeline for recovery should lead to a return just prior to the start of the regular-season tipping off, barring any setbacks. However, he may be behind on his conditioning at that point.
Justin Powell : Joins Sacramento for camp
Powell and the Kings agreed to an Exhibit 10 deal Wednesday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports. Powell has zero NBA experience, but he spent the 2023-24 season with the Charge in the G League. Across 16 appearances, Powell averaged 7.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists. He's considered a longshot to make Sacramento's final roster.
