Engaging in discussions about the energy transition drives progress for a more sustainable and resilient future, and, yesterday, we had the opportunity to participate in the Fourth Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit of Economist Impact SE Europe Events.   Mr Alexis Paizis, PPC Group’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Conventional Generation, engaged in a meaningful dialogue with Alasdair Ross, Countries Editor at The Economist, where he underscored the complexity of transitioning to a green energy system within Southeast Europe, balancing sustainability goals with the practical need for energy security and reliability amidst the climate crisis.   Specifically, Mr Paizis elaborated on the progress in the Greek energy mix over recent years, and the system requirements, as well as the integration of the RES #technologies during this journey towards clean energy. He also highlighted the impact of #climate crisis on this green transformation today, and the pivotal role of the Dispatchable Power Plants to ensure energy security and reliability, as more RES are being developed. “Lignite energy generation has completed its life cycle and is projected to reach zero after 2026,” Mr Paizis emphatically stated. “At the same time, during the era of the climate crisis, new Hydro Power Plants, and new Pump Hydro Storage Plants are required, while the economic viability of Natural Gas PP’s, is inextricably linked to Market Transformation Mechanisms,” he concluded.   Committed to strengthening its position as a leader in clean energy in Southeast Europe, #PPC Group is aiming for a net zero carbon footprint by 2040, with the increase of its investments in RES and the phased decommissioning of lignite units being at the center of its #energy planning. Our Chairman & CEO, Mr. Georgios Stassis, focused on the importance of new strategic collaborations between Southeastern #Europe and the #USA as a necessary component for energy security in Europe and for affordable energy prices, as well as the significant role of PPC in the broader region, during his speech at the 8th Southeast Europe Energy Forum (SEEF2024) earlier today, in Thessaloniki.   "Building a secure energy system in our region requires strong partnerships, and the collaboration between Southeastern Europe and the United States is critical. In this new era, it is not a call for protectionism. It is a call for the creation of new partnerships," he specifically mentioned. "At PPC, we are committed to being a force of stability while at the same time driving the energy transition forward. We do understand the importance of partners and, in general, what is needed to carry out the energy transition while ensuring energy security," Mr. Stassis added, and continued: "This is our mission and the main driving force behind all our decisions. PPC announces that it has entered into a binding agreement with Evryo Group, owned by funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management, to acquire their renewable #energy generation portfolio in Romania, which comprises 629MW RES in operation, and about 145MW in pipeline assets.   The acquisition further strengthens PPC Group’s growth strategy in Romania and Southeast Europe, with the addition of a significant #renewables operating portfolio, including 600MW onshore wind, 22MW hydro, 6MW BESS, 1MW solar PV installed capacity, and about 145MW pipeline assets.   Upon completion of the agreement, PPC’s #RES portfolio in operation in Romania will double, and total RES of PPC Group in operation will reach 5.3GW. At the same time, the Group will add an estimated EBITDA of €100 m. on an annual basis.   #PPC Group have extensive experience in operating RES projects with a substantial solar pipeline in Greece. New Wind Project in Romania We are thrilled to share the beginning of the construction phase of a new wind farm to our renewable energy portfolio. Located in Deleni, Vaslui County in eastern Romania, this wind farm will have an installed capacity of 140 MW. Given the high wind potential in eastern Romania, the estimated annual production of the park is projected to reach 370 GWh. This energy will be sufficient to power approximately 62,000 households annually. Moreover, once operational, CO2 emissions of 215,000 tones will be avoided annually. Currently under construction by PPC Renewables - ΔΕΗ Ανανεώσιμες, the project features 23 GE Vernova wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6.1 MW. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
